Here are the two images we had open in the previous movie and I'll just zoom in on them so that we can see them. I'll bring out my Links Panel. You can see that they're both here. This I have as a Photoshop file and this one is an Illustrator file. Now, the nice thing about images when you place them into InDesign and there's just a link there, is that you can edit them in one program and it can be updated immediately in the next. So let's start with Photoshop. I'll select this one and you can do it from the Edit Original in the Links Panel here but I'm not going to do that for the time being. I'm just going to right-click on the image and then just choose Edit Original. Now, you can choose Edit With and it will give you the choice of a number of different programs here. The default for a Photoshop File is Photoshop but sometimes if you get a JPEG you might find it opening in a viewer or something like that so you may have to go to Edit With and choose Photoshop. But I can just hit Edit Original here. We go into Photoshop and we can edit this one. Now, here we can just change the color in it, we can change a lot of the various things here and I can just create a new Layer. Let me get my Layers Menu out. There it is. Well, I did have it up. And here I can add let's say change the hue. Go to Hue Saturation and then I can just change the color of this dramatically like that and then I can save it. File, Save, close it up, go back to InDesign and look, it's updated automatically and that is why you want to link files rather than paste it, if for no other reason because once you paste it in there's not a lot you can do with it and you can do the same for Illustrator. Let me select this one and again, we can choose Edit Original or Edit With. I'll just go to Edit With, Illustrator is the default for this type of graphic. Here it opens it up and then I can bring it in here and Object, we can Ungroup everything here and come in, maybe select this, change the color to a blue, change this to a light color, maybe this red here. We'll change it to Starburst, change to an orange color like this. It's a stroke, that's why it's not doing it. Well, let's see what else we can come in, just come in and just make this pure blue like that. You get the idea. I'm not much of an Illustrator user so I'm not going to do too much fancy with it and again, I can save it, Ctrl- or Cmd-S and save it. Now, first of all, before I switch back to InDesign I'm just going to copy this because we'll paste it InDesign so I can show you something else and then when we click in this, you can see that it's updated. I'll just move this over to the side for the time being and paste it in from Illustrator. Now, when you paste it in from Illustrator, the link doesn't remain so you can't go in and edit it but what you can do is Ungroup it and look, we've lost all the color already in this one and we can go in and Edit it and give it color there but the tools are not as powerful as Illustrator so you, again, another reason to stay away from Cut and Paste and just link the graphics. That way you can just go back and choose Edit Original like that and make whatever changes you need in the correct program.
