In this movie, I'm going to talk about duplicating and it works very similarly to Copy and Paste but there are a few little things that make it very useful as a feature. So, if I select this item I can come to the Edit Menu and choose Duplicate and there, it places it on the page. Notice that it offsets it a little bit vertically and horizontally and I will talk about how that is worked out just a little bit later here. And, of course, it works the same way as text. This isn't available through the context sensitive menu. I have a feeling that it used to be but I just can't remember. Anyway, in CS5 it definitely isn't, so we can choose Edit, Duplicate, like that and there it offsets it again and places it on the page. Now in my workflow I tend to use this method of duplicating which is to select the item, hold down the Cmd-Option or Ctrl-Alt keys and notice that the cursor's changed to a double arrow like that. I simply drag across the page like that and then release. Now when you do this, when you start dragging you can release the Ctrl-Option or, Cmd-Option or Ctrl-Alt keys and just keep on moving like that if you wish. So, as soon as you start duplicating you can release those keys. Notice the cursor's changed to two white arrows rather than a black and red one and release it like that. Now let me go back to the Duplicate command. If I select this, choose Edit, Duplicate and notice it didn't offset it vertically, it just took it along the same horizontal line there and the reason is, it duplicates it based on the last duplicate done, no matter what method it is. So if I select this one, Edit, Duplicate, it duplicates it the same way. Now if I were to come up and duplicate this one using the Shortcut keys like this and delete it, then select this, Edit, Duplicate, then it just takes it up a page. So, that's just so that you know how it actually does it. Now you can also use the constraining key, the Shift key, when you're doing this, so if you select something like this and duplicate it using Cmd-Option, Ctrl-Alt and then you can release those keys now and hit the Shift key, you can constrain it along the axis like that and release and that way you've got it exactly aligned with this one. So, let me delete that and go to a new document and we'll talk about another duplication option which is Step and Repeat. Now here I've got a mock business card set up. It's U.S. Standard size, 3 and a half by 2 inches and my page size is 7 inches by 10 so that I can have 10 of these business cards set up on the page. So what I do is come up, select everything like this, go to the Edit Menu, choose Step and Repeat. Now, here we can do the count and I'm just going to do a count of 1. I'm going to repeat it once. And I'm going to turn the Preview on like this, so it gives you a preview, but I'm going to do it 3.5, hit the Tab key and there you can see it's duplicated on the page. So we've got 2-up like that and now we need to do it along the vertical, so I'll select everything, Edit, Step and Repeat and the count will be 4 and look, it's not letting me do it and the reason is, it's trying to put 4 across horizontally, across here and there just isn't enough space, so I've got to set this to zero first and sometimes you'll find you've got to do this. If it's not working, take a look at this option. It's normally the reason. Hit Tab, count 3, count 4 and there, they're duplicated on the page like that and you've got it all set up. But there's an easier way and this is actually new to In Design CS5 so let me undo a couple of times to get back to where we started and choose Edit, Step and Repeat and it defaults to the previous one as you'll notice, but let me just take this back down to 1 at the moment. I'm going to choose Create a Grid, like this. So we've got two columns. We can set as many as we want, but we want 2 columns here and the Vertical Offset is going to be 2 inches, but here we can set the Horizontal as well, 3.5. You could set the Horizontal as well, the last time we did it, but we didn't do it, we didn't need it and now we've just got to set our rows, 5 rows like this and there, it's all done in one step instead of two that you had to do in previous versions because of this new feature, Create as a Grid. Click on OK and there, everything's set up. Now this isn't really set up correctly for a business card because there's no bleeds and there are some other issues here, but for the purposes of this tutorial this is a great way to look at making multiple items on the page and then you could just go in and edit the names and phone numbers, whatever is appropriate.
