Interface Basics / Control Panel pt. 2
Subtitles of the Movie
We're going to start off with a reference point, or Proxy Button as it's sometimes known, up here at the top left-hand corner. When I select an object you can see that everything changes based on what the object is, but here we have the X and the Y reference and they're referencing the position on the page. At the moment it's 1.074 here on the Horizontal Ruler and 2.238 on the Vertical Ruler, but the reference point is the top left-hand corner. That would be this point. As I change it to the center you'll notice that these coordinates change. Lower right, change again, lower center, et cetera. I'll put it back to the center. Now this can be very important, this reference point, when you're doing some changes. For example, if I were to come over here and say Flip Vertically, like this, it flips vertically around this point. If I were to change it down here to the lower center and then choose Flip Vertically, it flips based on this point. Notice that this is now the center point, or the focal point. It's at the top center. Let me undo this, Ctrl- or Cmd-Z to get it back to where it was and we'll talk about this one, which is the Width and the Height of the frame. Not necessarily the image within it, just the frame itself. Now, if I were to change this and let me make my reference point top left like that, to let's say 3 inches, I'll hit Enter like that. Notice that it changes 3 inches in the Width but not the Height. I'll undo that. If I were to select this button to constrain the proportions, it's like a link now, now when I change it to 3 inches it changes both the Height and the Width of the frame. So, in most cases you are going to want to resize proportionally but not always, but this is how you change it, how you force it. Then we get into some other items like the Flip, the Rotation and this button here will tell us whether it's been flipped or rotated or not. You can see it like that. It goes back to normal and here we can select the Content, which means we're selecting what is in the frame, not the frame itself, back and forward. Here we can select items on the page. This is very useful if you've got a group of items that are all grouped together and sometimes it's hard to get in with the Selection Tool and select them. New to InDesign CS5 you can now change the color of the Fill and the Stroke directly from the Control Panel. This is a great thing. It makes life a lot easier. I can change the Fill, you won't see anything happen here but I can come through and change the Stroke. You can see the change of the color there. I'm going to go back to Paper. We can change the Weight of the Stroke here from this button and the type of Stroke we have. So, these are all options that we'll be going through as we move along and remember, when I click on text everything's going to change and these options are available to us. And we'll just get into the details in the upcoming movies.
