What happens if we move an individual page? Well, let's take a look at that. Here I can select Page 3 and just drag it down till it's after Page 5 like that. Ah, but look what happens. Everything seems to have shifted and as I moved on through this you can see that Page 4 and Page 3 are now a little bit wonky. Let me undo it. And what has happened, because not everything is centered in the page. They're offset because of the margins that I have on each page. If a right-hand page becomes a left-hand page, or vice versa, then I'm going to have to reposition everything accordingly as I go through it. So, in a lot of cases if you have pages that are Spreads you're probably going to want to move them both together. Sometimes what I would do if I need to shuffle things is create a couple of blank pages in the middle, add certain items to it. Let's go through and do it. Let's insert a couple of pages after Page 3 so we've got two blank pages there. That way I can maybe take an item from Page 3 like this, and copy it, or I'll cut it, Ctrl- or Cmd-X, go down to Page 4 or 5, and then I'll paste it, and then I can just move it over to this page like this, assuming I have Guides there. Maybe come up, select this one, Ctrl- or Cmd-X, paste it here, just reposition it. Oops - Still not used to that new feature that lets you move things in there - and that way I can now select this page here and move it down in between 6 and 7 like that, delete these white Spreads here with nothing on them, and there everything has shuffled and back to normal. That may be a little bit complicated, but if you go through and try it yourself this file will be on the sample files so you can use it just to play around with it. Now let take a look at one more option we've got when we're shuffling pages here. If I pull down this menu here we've got these two items checked: Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle, and Allow Document Pages to Shuffle. So if they are not permitted to shuffle - and I'll just turn both of them off because sometimes we'll select it and sometimes we won't here - then there's some interesting things that we can actually do here. So if I select this page here and move it down here like this and release it, you can see it separates it from the Spread so it creates an individual page that's not linked to the other Spread. I don't really use that too much as a feature so I'll undo it, but where it really is good is you can create gate-folds here. So if I select this and move it up here - you can see the line is in front of it - but if I move it close over here you can see it turns to your bracket, and what that means is, it's going to add it to Spreads 2 and 3. See that? So it's now Spread 2 through 4 and I can do the same with Page 5. Move it up here like this, again, if I move it way to the left we get the black line, but as I move it close to this it links it in there with the bracketed line, release it, there it is. I'll double-click in this and we're going to have to zoom out a little bit here. I'll just use this to zoom out to 25 percent, and you can see that we've got a complete Spread of documents there. Now you can't do that if you have these options allowed here, the Document Pages to Shuffle. If it's checked you're not going to be able to do that, but if it's unchecked then you can create these gate-folds. Now, a little bit later on in this chapter when I talk about the new feature Multiple Page Sizes, I'll show you a great example of when you can use this. So keep that in mind. It's a good way to do a big Spread if you're creating a very wide document.
