Another new feature in InDesign CS4 is Smart Guides. This is a really great new feature, it eliminates the need to draw guides all over the made to a greater extent although I've already shown you how to use them so you know how to do it if you want them more fixed. So let's see how they work. I'm going to zoom in on this page here like this and we'll turn them on, I've just go the one graphic here for the time being and we'll see how it works. I'll pull down the View menu Grids and guides, Smart guides. Control or Command U is the Shortcut key, you'll probably want to remember that one. I'm not going to turn it on from there, I'm going to go up to the Application bar, click on this and turn it on, Smart Guides right here. Now when I start to move this, look what happens. You can see that Smart guide has aligned to the center of the gutter, I'll move it over here look, it's aligned to the center of that column, center of this column, coming over here it automatically align to the margins anyway so that's not going to show, I go down to the bottom of the page it's aligning there like that. So as I mov across the page with my graphic look how the bottom of it is now aligning to the center of the page, it brings the guides in like that and as soon as I release it the guides go away. So you don't have the clutter across the page, see how we've got two guides there because it's aligning to two spots, and we'll try it again here in between the gutter, this is very useful. Sometimes you just want to place something right in the middle of that gutter and this makes it so much easier than eyeballing it or drawing a guide in, this is just great like that. But there's more to it than just this. We can align objects to each other. So let me zoom out, Control or Command 0 and just move down to the next page here where I have four objects. I'm going to zoom in here like this and as I start moving this object, we will see what happens. See that green line? How it's aligning to the top of the frame with the monkey? Now these frames are different sizes, let me just put this one out of the way a bit because I don't want it aligning to that one and zoom in here like this, as I move it down you can see how it is aligning to the bottom of the monkey or if I move it up it will align to the top. Down here like this you can see the alignment of the two objects like that and then come over, it aligns to the left, or maybe the center, now sometimes you've just got to move your mouse very carefully. Now that saves you bringing this in like this, drawing a guide like this, and then eyeballing this to the center, this is just so good. So, I'm going to just get rid of all the columns here because I don't want them distracting us so we'll go Layout and Margins and columns and I'm just going to set this to one, one's the minimum you can have, you can't have zero columns. And I'm just going to delete these two guys, select it and delete, select and delete. And zoom out so that I can have all four objects here and we can align them all. Now it gets really fantastic when you're aligning multiple ones, so I'll get this and I want to align them all to the top. There, just align that one, bring this one up, align there, bring this one up and align it like that. But notice how the spacing between them is different, but watch as I move here like this, you can see these lines and I want to point at the screen but I know you won't see my finger but the line at the bottom between the airplane and the robot, it tells me that it's exactly the same. And then I can mov this one here like this, adjust it again, look at how the alignments the same, I've got the spacing between these two the same I moved that off a little bit but I can correct that a little bit later and there's the alignment in that one. Move it back up, I'm just going to hold the Shift key, hold it up like that and you do have to be a little bit careful if you're trying to align more than one thing at a time, I do want it aligned at the top of this airplane here, let's get them all aligned, there that one is, whoops, there, the spacing there let's just get the spacing of this one, there it is perfect. So they're perfectly aligned at the top and the spacing between them is exactly the same. But there's more to it than that, wait until you see this. I'm going to use the rotation tool, I'm going to press and drag like that and we have rotated it. Now if I come over and select this one here, I can come over, now look carefully, I'll zoom in on these two so that you can really see it a little bit better and I start rotating this, whoah, wait, there it is, you can just see if you look at the monkey how the rotation angle when it becomes the same as the plane, or the plane becomes the same as the monkey would be a more accurate way of putting it, it just shows up, there it is, I've rotated it exactly the same angle. If I select this, you can see it's a 10 percent rotation, this one here, a 10 percent rotation and then I can do this one, I could actually do a repeat feature to do it again but since we're talking about the smart rotation here I'll just press and drag and there you can see both of them like that and I'll do the last one here. Coming over to our little friend at the end, rotate, press and drag, there we see it, got it, Control or Command 0 to move out and there we've got everything aligned perfectly and the angle of each one is the same.
