Navigating the Document / Hand Tool

Subtitles of the Movie

A great little tool is the Hand Tool here. I call it the Hand Grabber Tool sometimes. Notice that the Shortcut key is H. Now, they've added some new features to this tool which I get to in the next movie so I have to be careful not to invoke them here but I should be able to do that. Anyway, let me select this tool here and here you can see that we've got five fingers and when I press down and drag like that, the hand closes up. We can move around the page. We can even scroll down into other pages like that. I don't want to go that far at the moment so I'll just release it approximately where we are. Now, it's very useful when you're zoomed in so let's zoom in on it. Now, I would love to go Control or Command Spacebar and zoom in but it doesn't let you do it in this particular tool so I'm going to have to come down and just manually select the Zoom Tool and I'm just going to marquee select to zoom in, move back to the Hand Tool and then press and grab and then move around like this. So that way if I'm editing this text I can select it, change it, whatever and press and drag, move down to the next, press and drag, move down to the next like that. Very easy. I use it all the time. However, one thing you will notice, that it's a sticky one. Just like the Zoom Tool we saw in the previous movie, it remains the Hand Tool and doesn't switch back to the previous tool you were using. So how do we solve that? Let's select the Selection Tool here and if I want to move down so that I can see this text, I hit the Spacebar. Now, as soon as I hit the Spacebar, it turns to the Hand Tool, press and drag and release the Spacebar and there, we're back to the Selection Tool. It actually works with whatever tool you're using. Let's say I'm drawing a box here, press and drag after holding the Spacebar and as soon as I release, I'm back to this tool. I'm just going to go back to the Selection Tool here first of all and one more time. Spacebar, press drag. Now, as soon as you start moving, you can release the Spacebar. You don't need to keep it held down and release like that. Let's say I've got the Text Tool selected here. I can come over here, put down the Spacebar, nothing apparently happens but as soon as I press down and start moving, it just acts the same way. So it doesn't turn into your Hand Grabber the way it does with the Selection Tool but it works the same. However, what happens if I'm actually editing text like this. Press down the Spacebar. Woops, I've just added a lot of spaces. Well, that kind of makes sense. So what we need is another modifying tool or another modifying key, should I say. And that is the Alt or Option Key. If I hold down the Alt or Option Key, then the Spacebar and start dragging and release, it's there. In fact, in this version of InDesign, I can just hold down the Option Key. Older versions you do need to hold Option and Spacebar. And there we go. So when you're moving around, just the Text Tool, just the Spacebar with the text selected in there. You can go Alt Spacebar or just Alt and that invokes the Hand Tool and you can move around. Very, very useful.
