Navigating the Document / Zoom Tool

Subtitles of the Movie

Another way to zoom in and out of your document is using the Zoom Tool. The Zoom Tool is located on the Tools Palette down here at the bottom and when I click on it you can see that the magnifying glass with a plus sign comes up. You can click anywhere in the page and it zooms in around that spot. So if I click on my guy on the bicycle here, it zooms in around him, over to the monkey, it zooms in there, robot and this is the racecar up there. If I click there it zooms in in preset amounts. If I want to zoom out, I can hold down the Alt or Option Key and notice how it changes to a minus sign and it zooms out again on the area where I clicked like that. Release the Alt or Option and it goes back to the plus sign and I zoom in again like that. Now, one of the disadvantages of the Zoom Tool, I think anyway, is that when you selected it and zoom in, you have to go back to select, say this little x tool or the Text Tool. I may remember the Shortcut key to make it a little bit easier and that's why I like to use another option. I'm just clicking in the page now. Hit Control Alt or Command Option Zero to show the full spread we have here and this time instead of selecting this tool, I'm going to hold down the Control or Command Key and hit the Spacebar. And then I've got the Zoom Tool. I can click, click twice just to see we got the real effect there and as soon as I release, it goes automatically back to the Selection Tool like that. So again, Control or Command plus the Spacebar. It comes up. I'll click there and if I hold down those keys plus the Alt or Option Keys, it goes into minus and when I release it goes back to the Selection Tool. However, using that method there's an even better way and this is the way that I do it in everyday use. Again, let me go back to full spread, Control Alt or Command Option Zero and then I'll hold down Command or Control Spacebar and I'm going to draw a marquee around the area that I want to zoom in on and this really gives me control. If I wanted to zoom in on this text, I just draw it around it. Now, as soon as you start drawing the marquee, you can release the keys on the keyboard. This will hold until I release the Minus like that and there we've just zoomed in on the area that I want. Now, if I wanted to zoom out, I do have to use the Minus Sign. I can't marquee zoom out but I can marquee zoom in and again, Control or Command Spacebar, start dragging and it doesn't matter what size the area is here. Here's a quite a bit larger size like that and I've zoomed in in that area. So these are the keys that I remember. If I want to zoom out to full page and we'll just ignore that it's a spread at the moment. I'm just going to go Control or Command Zero to zoom out like that and Control or Command Spacebar to get my Zoom Tool to zoom in on some text and if you remember those keys, I think you'll do very well. Control or Command Zero and you're going to actually hear me using them and saying them quite a bit as we go through here. So hopefully just by usage you'll remember those.
