I've moved another document to show you the last thing I want to talk about as regards Layers, and that is how Layers work in conjunction with Master Pages. The simple fact is, they don't really work any differently, but sometimes things can happen and you sit and look and say, Ooh. What's that? Why is that happening and it's because of the way they're interacting. Now, I've got some items like the items on the top here and the items on the bottom on a Master Page. Now let's say I wanted to take this toy here, enlarge it like that so that it goes over the header like that for a graphic effect, well that's fine. That's what I want, but let's look at another example. Let's take this motorcycle down at the bottom and I'll zoom in on it, and if I make this larger, say I wanted it larger like that, I want it going over the line, that's fine like that, but I really don't want it going over the robot. So, how could I solve that? Well, as you saw from Master Pages, I could break the link with a Master Page by bringing this up moving it up to the top layer and then moving it on top of that, but there's a better way of doing it, and that is by organizing your Master Pages in a logical way so that you know everything on them is going to be on top. So let me switch over to my Master Page. Alright, I'll go to Pages here, and we saw that in the last Chapter, and we can see we've got a B here, so that means we're on Master Page B, so I'll just double-click there and go over. I'm going to hit Control or Command zero to zoom out here so that we can see everything. I'll bring up my Layers Palette here and there you can see, when I select, I think just about everything in this page, everything's on the background. So that means that everything on the Master Pages in this document are going to be behind everything. Anything on a Master Page is always behind everything else on that page, but Master Page Layers work the same way. So what I can do is I can move some elements to a different layer on a Master Page and even though they're on a Master Page they'll be on top of everything else that's on one of these different layers. Let me show you what I mean. I'm going to create a New Layer here and it comes up at the top and I'm just going to call it Top, like that. That way I can select this graphic here and, as we have seen, just drag this up to the top, move it to the top; I'll do the same for the one on the other side, the page, like that, drag it up to the top like that. Now everything looks the same in the Master Page, however, when we go back to the page we were working on, which was Page 4 and 5, like this, and zoom in on the bottom here, there you can see that the robot is now on top of this, because when I select this, go to my Layers, you can see this is on the Toys Layer, which is below the Top Layer, therefore logically even though this is on a Master Page because it's on a Layer sitting higher, stacked higher than this one, then it will come out on top always. If I did want this one, this motorcycle, to go on top, I could always just drag it up to the Top Layer and then it comes on, on top of it, because on any given layer, the Master Page items will always be at the bottom of that layer. But I don't want that, so I'll just drag it back to Toys and there we have the effect we want.
