Adobe InDesign CS4 Tutorials

Introduction / New Features Overview

Subtitles of the Movie

In this tutorial I assume no prior knowledge of InDesign, so if you're new to it, this tutorial is good for you. If you're upgrading from a previous version or have a little knowledge, there is still plenty of information here for you. I would also recommend against skipping over some topics that you think you know because I interject the tutorial with little tips and tricks on how to work some of these features a little bit more efficiently. There is no specific chapter on the new features in this tutorial; I just integrate them into the appropriate chapter as we move along so you can look out for them. However, I'm just going to give a brief overview of some of the new features here and as usual, with any upgrade, there's some big ones that you go wow with and there's other little interface changes that really enhance your productivity. And usually they're the ones that turn out to the best for some reason and there's some in this version of InDesign which are certainly like that. So I'm just going to fly through some of the new things that you may see. One of which is the new interface. It looks completely different now and notice the way that we have the tabbed documents up here to make multiple documents open at the same time; more efficient. We have new workspaces that are built in and they can get changed. Notice as I go back and forward choosing them, there are different ones here. We'll learn how to modify them and revert back to them if necessary. One of the big things is the Smart Guides. As we move things across the page, alignment has just become a lot easier; alignment with other objects on the page and alignment within the page because of these new Smart Guides which appear in the screen and then disappear as soon as you release. And that has created a lot less clutter on the screen. Links have been upgraded and now when you select an object like this imported graphic, we have a lot of great information at our fingertips about it. We also have a live preview down here so when we preflight the document, we don't have to go to your dialog box. We just do it on the fly. That's another great features. Spread rotation; we can just rotate the spreads now, so I can come over, pull down this menu here and choose Rotate Spread View like that. I'll undo that and that's a great way of working with some documents that require you to have things upside down, left and right. No more the need for the monitor that turns 90 degrees. Another big feature is conditional text. Here you can apply conditions to text and when I bring out this menu here, I have this flyer of a trade show in London but I can just by clicking a couple of buttons, change all the information relating to the trade show in New York and here we've got another one in San Francisco. Different dates, different text up here and if you noticed, a different background. I will show you how to put graphics as conditional text as we go along. The other thing we have is more interactivity for the web. If we pull down the Window Menu and we can go to Interactive, we can have bookmarks, buttons, hyperlinks. Now, we always had hyperlinks in InDesign but it's just got a lot easier now and the program now integrates with the standard Creative Suite programs like Photoshop and Illustrator but we're working more with Dreamweaver and Flash so we can export our InDesign files so that they can be used directly there. So this is a great upgrade and I think you'll enjoy the new features if you've used InDesign before. But if you haven't then everything is fantastic.
