My name is Brian White and I will be your guide through this Adobe InDesign CS4 tutorial. InDesign is the leading page layout program. It is part of the Adobe Creative Suite, which includes programs like Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver and Flash. There are some others too. Although it's called InDesign CS4, it is really InDesign version 6. It was released in 1999 to replace the aging PageMaker, which had just run its lifeline. I didn't start using it until version 2 and I really liked it but when they brought version 3, which was called Adobe InDesign CS, CS standing for Creative Suite, it really blew me away. It was then that I did my first VTC tutorial on InDesign and I have had the pleasure to do the upgrades to InDesign CS2, CS3 and now CS4. I'm often asked which is better; InDesign or Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign. And the answer really is none. They're different programs for different purposes. However, I see InDesign as the end result so you'll manipulate your photographs and images in Photoshop, you'll create logos and illustrations in Illustrator and then you bring them into InDesign for final layout for print. It's great for one-page documents or thousand-page documents. It is a very, very powerful program and with this version you're starting to see more integration into the web so that it now works with Dreamweaver and Flash to a certain extent and later on in this tutorial there is a chapter on how the Creative Suite programs work together. So I hope you enjoy it. There's a lot of information here and we'll get started in the next movie with a very brief overview of the new features in InDesign CS4.
