Interface Basics / Customizing Menus
Subtitles of the Movie
Here we're going to take a look at customizing your menus. These are the menus up here when you pull these down. Now, we've already seen if we go and choose one of the basic workspaces like Getting Started that if I go to a menu like View here, it only shows me some of the options and if I need to see everything, I can go Show All Menus. Now, I don't particularly like that because usually one of the menu items that I want to see, they're not showing; they're hiding. But on the other hand, if I know which ones I know, why not turn those off? Because, for example, Zoom In, Zoom Out, I know all the shortcut keys, fit page in window why have them there? And if I want something in the View Menu, when it comes down, then I just have the ones that I need to know. So let me show you how it works. I'm going to switch back to VTC1 as the option and go to Edit, Menus and here is where we define them. We've got a choice between Application Menus and the Context and Panel Menus. So there is so much here that you can customize. Look at that. That's every menu and option available to you. But I'm going to start off with the Application Menus and as I said before, we'll take a look at the view menu and here it's just a simple turn on, turn off. So what were the ones that I said I knew? I know zoom in, zoom out. Don't need these here. Fit to window, I know the Shortcut key so I can just turn these ones off like that. Now the ones that are on here, for example overprint preview, I can come over here and choose a color so it stands out. Overprint Preview. So I can turn it on quickly down here and then moving down here again, let's see, the Story Editor. I can maybe turn it off. I don't want it there. Display Performance, I use the right-hand mouse button for that. But let's say Rotate Spread. I need it highlighted so I'll choose a green like that. Now, after you've done all your modifying, you'll see it says InDesign Default Modified. A good idea is to create your own. So I'll go Save As and I'll call it VTC Menu1. Click in OK. So if I ever want to go back to the defaults, I can just click that or just go back to mine and change it or use it. So I'll click OK now. Then when I go to the View Menu here, look at that. I have just a few of them here, the Overprint Preview is highlighted in red, the Rotate Spread is rotated in green and if I still need to see the other ones, if I should forget them I can always choose Show All Menus like that and they go away. Now, when I click away, come back here, notice that it just shows me the subset unless I Show All Menus. So it doesn't stick on like that. Now that I've made these changes. I can add these to the default of VTC. For example, I can reset it or I can just save a new workspace and this time make sure that I've included the Menu Customization 2, click in OK and then I can just go back and forward between these as is necessary. The amount of customization you can do in here is huge. For example, I can go into the Contact Menu and the Character Panel Menu. For example, if I never use Underline, I can just turn it off, Strikethrough I never use that and No Break for example. Just turn them off. One that you want to highlight, come in and highlight it. Make it orange, click in OK and that one I bring up my, that's not the Character Menu. Go down here and choose Character like that. It has been customized and some of these options are not available. All Caps is highlighted but I can still show all menu options by turning it on like that. Very powerful customization features for all the menus including this one up here, the Control Panel and this one here you can actually come down and customize it here and show which attributes you want on it. Now, of course, as you become familiar with all the attributes and what these things do, once you go through the tutorial, I think you'll find that you may want to customize it for your own needs.
