Adobe InDesign CS3 Tutorials

Introduction / New Features

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie I'm going to talk briefly about some of the new features within InDesign CS3. Now, as I go through the tutorial, I will not be talking about new features in themselves. I'll just be integrating them into the tutorial. So this is just going to be a brief overview, but they will be covered in detail as you mov along. Now, as with every new version, there are lots of new features. Some are very dramatic and others are just productivity uses. I personally find that the productivity improvements are really the ones that I like a lot more and use a lot, but I'll just go over them briefly here. And one of the big ones is effects. So if I select, let's say, an image like this, I can go up to the control palette and go into the effects. Here's the drop shadow effect, but it's got lots of others. Inner shadow, outer and inner blow, bevel and emboss, satin, feather, directional feather, gradient feather. These are great features and there's lots of control in here over how you can get them to look. Also, you can change the settings where you can do it for the object, the stroke or the fill, or text. Of course, this is dimmed out because I've got a graphic selected. This one is a great improvement because, before, you had to just apply it to the entire object when you maybe only wanted it to the object but not the stroke. So that's a little one, but that means a lot. So here I've just applied the drop shadow and a bit of bevel to this. You can of course come over and do it to text. One of the nice things is they've really improved the control palette up here at the top. There are a lot more features on it and there are ways to customize it so that you can have on this what you want. Other big improvements are the interface. Over here, we've got our palettes here. They're organized a lot better. They're easy to customize and they keep out of the way just to make better use of your Desktop and space. Over here, the same with this one. If you recall, it was on two lines in a previous version. Now it's just a single list like this. Again, that's giving you more space to work in between. Other improved features are in the search and replace. If I go find-change it's called find-change in InDesign, not search-replace. I'll get it right eventually. We have the text search and replaces we had before, but we've got three more tabs here: GREP expressions, glyphs and objects. It makes changing things as they come in an awful, awful lot easier. We have also added table and cell styles. As I come down here, type and tables, you've got cell styles and table styles and this will help you give consistency to tables if you create a lot of them in your documents. They work pretty much the same way as paragraph and object styles, so they're easy to use. Some of the nice little features that you'll see as you go along, one is if I select an object and double click on it, I immediately switch to the direct select tool so that I can change its position like that and if I click on a grouped object like this, double click, I go into it and have the direct selection tool and I can just select any one item here and change it. This, in most cases before, I would be ungrouping it, going in and changing it and then grouping it back together. This is a simple change and it makes things a lot easier. One of the nicest features that I like is the ability to place an InDesign document directly into an InDesign document and that makes my life so much easier. When we get to that, I'll show you a good example of how it is a practical use in your workflow. So lots of new features. We'll be discussing them as we go along and I think you'll find that the new features and the productivity enhancements really make this a worthwhile upgrade.
