Interface Basics / The Welcome Screen
Subtitles of the Movie
When you first launch InDesign, you're going to see a welcome screen like this. Some of the items may be a little bit different. Now, this is new to CS3 and I'll go over it just briefly. On the left hand side, you can open a recent item. So these are your recently opened documents. I have nine items here. You may have less if you hadn't opened that many. You can go to open here and that will take you to open a file, where you can navigate your folders to choose a file to open. I'll just cancel out of that. You can also go straight to create a new document, to create a new book or create a new library. Now, in most of the cases here, we'll be dealing with documents, but books and libraries are things that I do cover later on in the tutorial. Now, you can also open something from a template and we'll look at that too. Down here, you have web links to InDesign exchange group, user group, partners, or plug-ins. For example, if I go to the exchange group, it takes me to this page. It opens up - I already had it open there but it wanted to open a new one as well - where it tells you some easy install extensions and timesaving functions for the Adobe suite of programs. You can obviously click on InDesign here and do it. So you can explore those in your free time. Down here we've got some help items, like getting started. It shows you some items about installation help resources. We can go back. It will show you new features here: creativity, productivity, support, enhancement and then the resources here. InDesign CS3 videos, of course the ones you're using are much better than those, so this is the screen that you will see. Down here isn't a button or clicking area; it's just a little get the most out of InDesign. Go to Adobe Bridge and find out more about tips and podcasts. Now, if you don't like this screen, which I usually don't, I would choose here don't show again. Then, when I open a new document, I'll accept the defaults like that and I don't see it. If I close this document, I don't have the welcome screen come up here, but if I hadn't checked it, you would. If you need to get it back, from the help menu, simply choose welcome screen. Here it comes up again. Turn this off. I'll open up a new document again, accept the defaults. Now when I close this, the welcome screen is back up again. I'm just going to turn it off because I don't want it.
