Subtitles of the Movie
In Illustrator and in Photoshop and in many applications, the effects we apply to our artwork are changeable, which means they are called Live Effects, they don't become permanent. This gives an artist a huge advantage over traditional media. You can simply hide things, show things, delete them, or turn them off or on. Let me give you an example. I'm going to create a simple shape, polygon and I'll apply a couple of effects to it, such as the color, such as the stroke, the weight of the stroke and even the type of stroke, so we can go ahead and give it a real cool jaggedy stroke like so and we'll change the color of stroke to blue. We'll continue by adding an effect, so go to the Effects Menu, and we'll go to Distort and Transform and lets add a Rough into it and now go ahead and accept the Default. Alright, so lets say you save this document and you did this for a client and the client hasn't gotten back to you, they're looking at it, they're approving it, its been two weeks, you have no idea what in the world you did to get this effect. So lets where the Live Effects come in handy. We can go to our Appearance Panel, I will tear this off and everything we've done is recorded for us. So as you can see it says roughen and we know that we got this from the Effects Menu because it says fx right here. So that's the beautiful thing about this. What else is beautiful about this? This blue text is live, so we Click on it and it opens up that Panel for us again and we can change things, so I can increase the size and detail of this roughen, click Preview and I can say OK and I have just changed this. I can also hide things, click on the eyeball, it's gone, click on the stroke, he's outta here, click on the fill, goodbye. So we have all these things that are actually appearances that have been applied to a simple polygon, from the fill, to the stroke, to the special effects. This is really handy. So, in the future, whenever you create things, don't forget just grab your Appearance Panel, because trust me you will forget from time to time what effect you applied to things and this is a great example of a Live Effect. Some of them are a little bit more intense as far as the computer usage, so I am going to go to something like a drop shadow and I'm going to hit OK and its going to take a little while to show up and there it is, as you can see here, it shows up as well.
