Let's face facts. None of us is perfect and we all make spelling mistakes in emails in documents to colleagues, and just in general. Now me, I have dyslexia as well so I'm really in trouble. What I can do is use Illustrator's Spell Checker to help me out. Now, the Spell Checker is one of the few tools in Illustrator that don't require you to have something selected, and you would think that it lives under the Type Menu but it doesn't. Adobe is so crafty! It actually lives under the Edit Menu. Edit, Check Spelling. But, before I go ahead and invoke this, let's talk about what I have here. I have a deliberately misspelled Ð at least we think it's deliberate Ð sentence here. Òth spelll checkcer is an amazin' tool,Ó said Arnagon, the night elf. And I wrote this because sometimes when you're writing things based on fantasy, or fiction, you may have created a character's name that doesn't exist. Of course the Spell Checker is definitely going to grab that and say this is wrong. So I'm going to show you how to add things like this to the Dictionary so it won't bother you again. Alright, so what I'm going to do is go to Edit, Check Spelling, and then this dialog box appears. What I could do at this point is click Start to begin Spell Checking. I can also see other options by clicking here, so I can tell the Spell Checker to look for repeated words and to automatically flag uncapitalized starts of sentences, so it will definitely look at the beginnings of the sentences to see whether it's capitalized or not. So, let me go ahead and click Done here and mov this sentence down so we can see the Spell Checker in effect. Alright, so here we go. I'm going to click Start and right away it notices that the sentence doesn't have a capital, and it's also misspelled. So, what we do here in this top field is we see the incorrect word, or the word that is not found by Illustrator's dictionary. Then we look to the Suggestions Box and go through the list to try to find the word, and hopefully it's in there. If it's not you can literally click and drag and type the word yourself. We can also continue by clicking Ignore, or click Change, or Add to the Dictionary. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to say Ignore, and it disregards my change. But if I want to add it to the Dictionary or actually change it, I have to click Change. So what I can do is go back, type the and this time click Change. Now the word stays corrected and it moves on to the next word, which is spelll. Now, of course I have three L's here, and I can go through the list once again and find a suggestion. So, this one looks correct tome and I can click Change. You also notice that we have something called Change All, so if you know that you spelled spelll with three L's Ð I just threw a little rhyme in there, look at that Ð then you can click Change All and you won't have to worry about coming to this again because it will automatically go through your entire document and change this for you. So, I'll go ahead and say Change All anyway. The Spell Checker has come across the word checkcer that's spelled wrong so it thinks I want checkers or checker, I'll go ahead and select this one and change it. Now here's an interesting one. This character doesn't speak proper English so it has a little bit of the words that are cut off, so I want this to stay the way it is and this character's always going to say stuff like that, so in this case I can Ignore All, or I can Add it to the Dictionary, which I'll do. Now I can go to said, and I don't want this to be capitalized, so I'm going to Ignore this one, and I'm also going to Add this fictional character's name to the Dictionary. You'll notice that it doesn't ask you any more regarding those words that you added because from now on it will ignore those. Once you're finished click Done and you can continue to type or work with your document. And that is how you use Adobe Illustrator's Spell Checker to check the spelling of the words in your documents.
