Company logos, mascots, buttons Ð those are the types of things that make great candidates to be turned into Symbols. So what I'm going to do is show you how to make your own Symbol and have it live inside of this Library. As we talked about there are tons of different categories available inside of Adobe Illustrator by default, but as you can see we can make our own Symbol. We also have the ability to go to Symbol Options and we can look at whatever we have selected as well to change the name of that symbol and the type of symbol. We're going to come back to this in just a moment. What I'm going to do now is I'm going to just create something that's easy. I'm going to grab a star and I'll just draw it out like so and I'll just give it a different fill color, yellow, and I have my Stroke here. What I can also do with this stroke is I can go to the Stroke Panel and add a little bit of a dashed line to it, just to make it look a little bit more interesting. So, let's say that this is going to be a symbol that I want to use and it's for my company. Well, all I can do at this point is go to my Symbol Library, tear this guy off, and I can easily put this in here by either going to this little Icon right here, choosing to create a New Symbol, or I can drag this Icon in here and, as I showed you earlier, I can also go to the Menu and choose to make it a Symbol. So, what I'm going to do first of all is just drag this on in. The Symbol Options appear as they would when we go here anyway, so I'm going to go Symbol, Options, by clicking and dragging my artwork into the Panel and I'll call it Starr, and I'll give it two r's just in case there's another star in there, and for those of you who are used to Flash, if you plan to animate this artwork inside of Flash you want to put the Registration where you want the object to rotate. For example, currently this black. represents that the rotation pivot point would be up here. So in Flash, if I animate this and I want it to spin around, it will actually spin up here. If I want it to spin from the center I have to click on the little center box. I can also choose to save this as a Graphic or a Movie Clip, both you can use in Flash as well. So, I'm going to go ahead and use it as a Movie Clip and click OK, and now here's my Symbol. I don't actually need this anymore, so I'll go ahead and Delete and I can drag out as many of my star symbols as I want. This is a great way to make your own custom bullets for documents that you want to use to showcase products that you have, so you can have, like for example, a little bullet point that says New and improved so and so, and now with less sugar, or whatever, and one more thing I want to mention, by the way, is Symbols, as I like to use them quite often, don't really dramatically increase the size of your document because every time you drag out a symbol you're simply pulling out a photocopy of that. The only Symbol that has any actual weight is the original, so I can pull out as many of these as I want to and not really slow down my machine.
