Introduction / System Requirements

Subtitles of the Movie

OK, let's talk about the kind of computer that you want to have in order to run Illustrator CS4 with the most efficiency. I'll start off by describing what you should have if you have a Macintosh system. You should have a Power PC U4 or G5 or you can have an Intel processor. Now, for people who are not familiar with what that means, the latest versions of the Mac can now run both the Macintosh OS as well as Windows. Now, in my system, I have an Intel and on occasion I will boot up Windows Vista and I'll work with applications that are Windows specific and I'll throw in the occasional video game in there because a lot of the games that are on the Windows aren't on the Mac. So Steve Jobs, if you're listening, get the games over here. You also need to have Macintosh OS X version 10.4.11 or 10.5.4. You need to have a minimum of 512 megabytes of RAM, although Adobe recommends one gigabyte. RAM is pretty much inexpensive these days so, you know, feel free to add as much as humanely possible. Keep in mind as well that if you're using Photoshop, Illustrator does not require as much horsepower as Photoshop does. So if you plan to use Illustrator in conjunction with Photoshop, then feel free to max out your RAM or at least get about two gigabytes because Photoshop is pretty much a RAM-hungry machine, whereas Illustrator, not so much. For your installation you should have two gigabytes of available hard drive space and of course you want to make sure you have enough space for your other applications. For your display, you should have a 1024 by 768 display with a 16-bit video card. To install Illustrator, you'll also going to need a DVD-ROM drive. You should also have the latest version of QuickTime installed. QuickTime by the way, is free. Just visit Apple.com and it's also available for the Windows platform. Once again, Apple.com. Check that out. And if you're going to use the Internet to find images, for example, you might want to have a broadband connection so that you can make your life a lot easier and find your images more quickly. Now let's head over to the Windows platform. On Windows you're going to want to have a two gigahertz or faster processor. You're going to want to have Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2, although they recommend Service Pack 3. You're going to want to have either Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate or Enterprise with Service Pack 1. The same RAM, 512 megabytes, but one gigabyte is recommended. And you're going to need the same amount of hard drive space available to install, which is two gigabytes. Once again, the display is also the same; 1024 by 768 with a 16-bit video card, a DVD-ROM drive and once again, broadband if you plan to surf the web to find stop photography and that kind of thing to use the application so you can trace things and that kind of thing. So those are the system requirements you'll need to use Adobe Illustrator CS4.
