Interface / Shortcuts
Subtitles of the Movie
If you really want to customize Illustrator even further, you can change the shortcut keys to access menus and commands. You can find this ability under the Edit Menu and Keyboard Shortcuts is at the bottom of this list. This is the Keyboards Shortcuts Dialog Box and what you'll see here is that we have the ability to change menu commands as well as tool commands. So to, for example, grab the Selection Tool while you're working, you would press V on your keyboard. Some of them don't have any shortcuts associated with them, such as Group Selection. The beautiful thing about this particular dialog box is that it will warn you if you try to give another command one that already exists. So let's say I want to make the area type V. I'll click right here in this blank space and it opens up this field. Then I'll just type a V. As you see there, by simply putting a V, it's going to put a little command key there because what I did was try to put a capital V. So a capital V, when you try to press Shift, gives you the actual Shift which is the Up Arrow. If I just want to put a V, you'll see that it says the shortcut V was already in use by the Selection Tool. So it leaves this area, the selection italicizes and the shortcut that's going to be assigned is now italics as well. What you can do is undo that and you'll be back to the way it was before. So once again, when you're trying to make a capital letter by using Shift, you'll actually be putting an arrow here instead. So this is now a legal shortcut so when I want to use the Area Type Tool, Shift V will take me to that tool and regular V will take to Selection. So when you're happy with everything, you can save these shortcuts, give it a keyset file name. You can also delete them and export the text. If you want to clear everything, you click Clear and that shortcut now goes away and you can also undo. So this dialog box is really going to do its best to make sure you don't accidentally mess up. You'll also notice, by the way, that the set has changed to custom because I gave this a shortcut. And this is the Illustrator defaults. So if you ever really go too far just choose the defaults and then click OK.
