Interface / Multiple Artboards

Subtitles of the Movie

Ladies and gentlemen, a feature that we've all been asking for since the stone age, multiple artboards. I've been using Illustrator since version 3 and I could never understand why I only got one of these per document. I never knew why I couldn't have, like, you know, five, six pages with different illustrations on it. But now Illustrator has finally given us the ability to create more than one artboard in our document. Now, this is actually going to be a two-parter that I am going to continue in a lesson called Crop because the crop functionality that was in Illustrator CS3 has pretty much been replaced by this capability of multiple artboards and I'm going to show you a very, very cool trick in that crop section that deals with what you can do with these artboards. So let's go ahead and get started by going to File, New and then you'll see here we have the ability to create number of artboards and what I'm going to do is I'm going to put four. And now what I can do is I can determine how these are going to be laid out once I enter OK. So I can have the grid by row, column, arrange by row and by column. So I'm going to leave it where it is now. As you can see by the little arrow, it tells how the document will be arranged. I can also determine the spacing in between the different rows. And I can also determine how many rows I'd like. So if I want all the artboards in just one row or on separate rows, I can choose that here. So with all this said, I'm going to now go over to this little arrow right here to show you that you can also change the flow of how these are going to be arranged. So I'm going to click back on this arrow here again. OK. Last but not least, of course you can choose your letter size; legal, tabloid or anything from the size category. And of course you can enter your own width and height as well. If you're going to have any bleed, you'll enter that here. You can also change the orientation from portrait to landscape and I'm going to click on Landscape and then I'm going to click OK. And here we have it; four, count them people, four artboards. So finally I can do more than one document at a time. So I can design a logo and a letterhead, a business card and everything else in one file. Now, in the second part, which once again is called Crop later on in this tutorial, I'll show you how to use the artboard tool to arrange these guys and resize them. But for now I'm going to go back to File, New again and also show you something else. I can change once again how this is arranged. As you saw there, I only have one row. This time I'll choose two rows and click OK. And now we have two rows with our artboards on them. So you have a lot of control. You can see everything in a row that's a straight line or you can do two rows and two columns. Columns go up and down and rows go this way. So that is the new functionality in Adobe Illustrator CS4; multiple artboards. Thank you Adobe.
