Interface / Document Profiles

Subtitles of the Movie

Whenever you want to quickly get started on a new document and you know exactly what you want to do, presets, known as document profiles, are going to be very handy for you to use. You can find them by going to File, New and then in the New Document Dialog Box, you'll see this area called New Document Profile. So let's say you want to do something in Illustrator for your website. Choose Web and then you can choose a size. These are the more commonly-used web sizes for the web so you can choose one from this list and the beautiful thing is you can customize it and you can type whatever you like. And PX simply stands for pixels. So this documents will be 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels tall. Let's say now that you want to work with something that's going to go to a printer. Of course you would choose print and then you can choose to work with different units such as points, Picas, inches and so on. I typically work with inches. So now I have an eight and one-half by eleven document. I can also change its orientation so that it's landscape or portrait and I can also choose legal, tabloid and some of the other sizes that you'll find in other countries. And I can also, of course, choose to work with mobile and devices, video and film, basic CMYK and basic RGB. I can also customize these to suit my own needs. So let's say I do want to create something for the web and I want to create something like a web banner that's pretty thin as far as height. So I'll go with this height here and make it two pixels. Once I hit the Tab Key on my keyboard, the document profile name is now custom, as you see here. And what I can do at this point is I can save this. I can give this a name and I can start working with my document; very handy indeed. I can also of course choose to browse and I can find another profile. And what happens when you choose that is Adobe will open up the new document profiles folder inside of your installation of Adobe Illustrator on your hard drive. So that is what document profiles are. They are simply shortcuts to get you started right away on a predetermined document size that you can customize at any time.
