Let's take a look at how we can use Illustrator CS4 to create content for InDesign CS3. This is a way to show you how you can use legacy versions of Illustrator to create content for applications that you may not have upgraded completely to CS4. Now, Adobe sells different packages. They have a Web Package, they have a Graphics Package, they have a Production Package, and each one of them has one or two applications that the others don't have. So, if you're in that boat, let me show you exactly what to do. Let's say we want to take this star and use it inside of an InDesign document. I'm going to go to File, Save As, and then on my Desktop I'm going to call this Star2. What I'm going to choose is Illustrator as a Format, but once we click Save another dialog box will appear. This is the important dialog box, and Version is what we're interested in as well. Currently I use Illustrator CS4, but I also have InDesign CS3. So, what I want to do is go to this pull-down and choose Illustrator CS3 because I believe this one, of course, will be more compatible since they're both from the same family. Then, I want to make sure Create PDF Compatible File is also selected. InDesign uses this PDF inside of its documents. I'm going to click OK. Illustrator will warn you that you're saving to an older, or legacy format, so you might have some problems if you were trying to use some of the advanced features, and this is important. You have to be aware of the new features that may not work with older versions of the Creative Suite, so in other words, don't get too fancy. I'm going to click OK and then I'll hop over to InDesign, which is already open. As you can see it's CS3. What I'm going to do at this point is go to File, and I'm not going to choose open. Don't forget, this cannot open an Illustrator document. Notice how the AI is ghosted out. InDesign needs the PDF that's inside of that, so I'm going to Cancel, and go to File, Place. Then I'm going to choose Star2. I'm also going to make sure I have Show Import Options selected so that if I have layers and other things that I want to turn off I can do so then. I'll click Open, and now I see a preview, I can see how many pages I have, and if I had more than one layer I could deselect them by going to Layers and I can turn things off and on with this Eyeball. I'll go back to General and then I'm going to click OK. In a moment, my cursor will have the Star attached to it, then I can click and drag out where I want that to go, and here is our Star. Now, one thing about Illustrator is it has the ability for you to use these handles to scale up the area that the content lives in, but if you want to move the star around itself inside of this boundary we have to grab the white arrow here, and you'll notice that it has the same name as the one in Illustrator, the Direct Selection Tool. So, I can click in my star now and move it around inside that boundary and place it where I'd like it to live. And that is how you can use InDesign in conjunction with Illustrator.
