In this video tutorial I'm going to walk you through how to find Unresolved Links, or cross-references, when working with Adobe FrameMaker 9. Once a document that contains unresolved links is identified the references need to be found and corrected. To start, open up a file that you know has errors in it related to cross-references. I choose OK to open the file regardless of the error and now I'm going to have to locate the specific location where the error exists, so I choose Edit, Find. In the Find dialog, rather than going with just text, I'm going to Find Unresolved Cross-Reference. I specify to look only in the document and click Find. I now locate the first and in this case the only, instance of an unresolved cross-reference. At this point I can decide to Resolve the cross-reference or to Delete the content, or even to Convert it To Text. One approach is just to double-click a cross-reference and work with the Cross-reference dialog seen here. I'm just going to move this and position it underneath the Find Change and change the type of information I'm looking for to the Paragraphs. Now I happen to know that these are Heading 1's that were being referenced and when I check for Heading 1's I can see one called Selecting Content. Looking at the text of my original cross-reference that was unresolved I know that the Heading 1 is what I want to find, specifically selecting Content and the default format of Paratext only is selected because of the type of information that I had double-clicked earlier. I could convert this to text and flatten it and remove the link, but that's generally not Best Practice and I'd recommend avoiding it whenever possible. Instead I'm going to replace the broken cross-reference with the corrected information. At this point I save the file and close the document using my keyboard shortcuts Ctrl-S to Save and Ctrl-W to Close and I reopen my file editing document. This time I get no error message because the cross-reference has already been fixed. I'm going to again Save and Close the document because every time that a document is opened, cross-references are updated. I also have a Book that still contains some unresolved cross-references, so I open it and again I'm going to use my Edit, Find-Change; I specify Unresolved Cross-references in the drop-down and you'll see that this section is reset and I'm looking across the Book. There's only one instance; I click Find and it's located inside my document. Sometimes it's a little tricky to work with the FrameMaker environment once you have several things open so I'm going to just minimize the Book environment. I now have my cross-reference: Adobe FrameMaker 9 Conceptual Model and again it's looking for a cross-reference marker inside the current document but it can't find it. So rather than looking for cross-reference markers, which have been deleted, I'm going to change to Paragraphs and once more identify Heading 1 by clicking and pressing H to jump to Heading 1. There's my Adobe FrameMaker 9 Conceptual Model. Again, the format is remembered and again I click Replace. I can Close the file and Save it and now if I try to update my Book I get no error messages because all of the cross-references are properly resolved. In some cases your cross-references won't be internal to a document but instead will link between two documents. If that's the case, you basically need to reinsert the cross-reference. Make sure that both the Destination and your Source Document are open; inside your Source Document that has the error select the broken cross-reference and choose Special Cross-Reference working your way through the dialog building a new cross-reference into the target Destination file.
