Editing Content / Undoing & Redoing

Subtitles of the Movie

In this video tutorial I'm going to take you through how to use the Undo and Redo feature in Adobe FrameMaker 9. FrameMaker supports a limited set of Undo and Redo to reset previous actions. If you perform actions and then save the document you can't Undo any changes that were made prior to the save; that is, saving the file completely resets the Undo. There are also several actions that will do the same thing. In order to get started one of the things you can do is choose Edit, History and a tab displays showing you the history of the current document. Since I haven't made any changes yet, the History is currently blank, but when I go in and I select the text and change it to United States you can see that in the History it now shows Typing as one of the actions that's been taken. If I highlight some of the content and I delete it, you can see that Clear is now displayed in the History. In the same way that if I take content and I cut it and I paste it elsewhere, Cut and Paste appear inside the History. Again, I take the remainder of this content and I delete it and once more Clear appears in my History. There are several ways to Undo and to go back through the History. One of them is to choose Edit, Undo and the command next to Undo indicates what the last change is in the History. So since the last change was a Clear, Edit, Undo, Clear the last change was modification of USA into United States, Edit, Undo typing puts it back to the beginning of the changes I've made. I can also choose Edit, Redo and step forward through the changes that have been made. The Redo and the Undo are also available on the Toolbar buttons: the Undo and the Redo, stepping forward and back through the document. Some actions, such as taking a cross-reference and converting it to text can completely reset the Undo stack. Notice under the Convert button there's some text that says: No Undo. When I click Convert you'll see that the History vanishes. Therefore, it's incredibly careful any time that you make a chance that has No Undo that you are certain that you want to reset your entire History. As a reminder, any time that you save a file, the History is completely reset and there is no more Undo. While the Undo and Redo are powerful features you have to use them with a bit of caution because in many cases they can be completely reset. If you become overly dependent on the Undo or the Redo in order to set things back to the way that they were, or to reapply changes that you had made and then undone, you may end up losing all of your modifications through something as simple as updating a cross-reference or saving your document.
