In this video tutorial I'm going to guide you through how to apply Master Pages automatically. By using Master Pages and Reference Page Code you can apply the Master Page based on Paragraph Tags that are in use on a page. However, this requires that the paragraphs are carefully designed, planned and the codes are developed in the document's reference pages as part of the Template. Failure to do any one of these parts will result in a function that doesn't work as expected. In addition, if you try to perform this function and your document is not set up with a Master Page Mapping Table in the Reference Page a dialog displays. If this occurs the automatic application of Master Pages is not supported in your Template and you should talk to the administrator or the person responsible for maintaining and developing these. It is more work to initially set up Master Pages to automatically format and configure themselves based on your needs, but you'll see in this example that it's definitely worth it. Consider this sample of a chapter that starts on the first page. Some of the content potentially will reflow onto the second page once I apply Page Layout. The second page has a graphic on it, which may jump to the third page if there's a reflow. Therefore, if I'm manually going in and configuring page layout and adding and removing text I have the possibility of running into a lot of additional overhead. However, because everything's set up in my Template I can choose Format, Page Layout and I can tell it to apply the Master Pages for me automatically. I get a message that all of the Master Pages will be reapplied and any manually applied Master Pages will be overridden or removed. Do I want to continue? Of course, so I click OK. Now, what just happened was that the first page shifted. It lost the header that was at the beginning of the page, the Chapter 1, United States of America has moved down into its own text frame and the rest of the text has shifted onto the second page. You can see that there's actually about two extra lines that appear at the top of the second page. This forces the graphic onto the third page which is automatically rotated because of the use of the Paragraph Tag and the graphic fits wonderfully. The problem manually changing this is that reflow occurs. If I remove a few paragraphs on the first page, content reflows. If I had to manually go in and reconfigure this I'd now have to take the second page and redefine it so that the Master Page is reset to the graphic page; I have to take the third page and redefine it to set to the default. Instead, because of my configuration, I choose Format, Page Layout and I simply instruct the system to apply Master Pages. Once more I click OK to confirm it and in an instant the page layout changes. Now the first, the second, the third and the fourth pages all have the correct layout and configuration based on the type of content. Again, it takes time and effort to correctly set up the Master Pages and the Reference Page Code to support this type of function but once it's in place you have a far more powerful Template.
