Adobe FrameMaker 9 Overview / Printing Files

Subtitles of the Movie

In this video tutorial we're going to explore how to print a file in Adobe FrameMaker 9. Printing sounds relatively straightforward and by and large it is, but there are a few things to consider when you go in to print one of your files. If I go in and I choose File, Print I get a dialog and inside this dialog I have a couple of key choices to make. One of them is whether I want to print all of my content or I want to have a specific range. The specific range starts on a given page and ends on a given page and only that page range will print. I can also choose to print Odd-numbered Pages, or only Even-numbered Pages. This is especially useful if you're printing to something like an inkjet which only handles single-sided and you want to be able to print double sided. First print your odd-numbered pages then reload the printer flipping the pages as required and then print only your even-numbered pages. If you choose Collate you'll be able to print multiple copies in the Print Range and then start your second print run. So for example, if you tell it to print 8 pages and to Collate and then to print 5 copies, you'll get five sets of pages 1 through 8 rather than getting 5 copies of page 1 followed by 5 copies of page 2 followed by 5 copies of page and so on. Options such as the Last Sheet First allow you to reverse the print order. Skip Blank Pages will exclude pages that don't have content in them. Spot Color As Black and White converts color content into pure black and white for print separations and Low-Resolution Images creates content where the graphics are printed at a lower quality and therefore printed faster but not necessarily at the quality that would be used for print production to distribute widely. If you work with Registration Marks you'll see appearing on page symbols outlining the page and this may be configured using Western or Tombo formatting. The symbols can be seen in the outside corners of the print page but are usually used to trim pages down from a larger page of paper to a smaller sheet. Thumbnail Row and Columns allow you to print multiple pages onto a single sheet. The content will automatically be scaled and placed onto a page for you. The Number of Copies is relatively straightforward. The Scale will increase or decrease the print size up or down and can be used if you're trying to fit oversized material onto a smaller piece of paper or you're printing small content but want to make it much larger in your finished output. The Print File option allows you to create Postscript or other printer files to be used later and may be used if a print house needs high-end digital printers and specific content to meet these, or if the Postscript needs to be parsed and manipulated by other software. If you click on the Separation Setup you'll be able to configure how your print colors appear in output. This is most often used if content is later parsed and manipulated by other software so that a print house can create plates for press publishing. I'm just going to click Cancel. If you're printing to a Postscript driver you can also generate Acrobat data. This allows you to create content such as Bookmarks that are going to run down the side of the margins almost like tables of contents inside your PDF environment. Finally, clicking Setup allows you to configure the printer. Once you've set all of your options simply click Print and create your output.
