Adobe FrameMaker 9 Overview / Crash Recovery

Subtitles of the Movie

In this short video tutorial we're going to explore how to recover files after a crash when using Adobe FrameMaker 9. If you've made changes to a file and you haven't saved it and FrameMaker crashes a recovery is created. Any time FrameMaker is about to crash this file is created by dumping the content from temporary files to the same location the original file was saved to. This Recovery File contains changes made up to the time of the crash, however, a Recovery File cannot be created if you haven't saved your document at least once. This means that any time and you choose File, New and you create a new document you have to remember to go in almost immediately and choose File, Save As, name the document, put it into a given location. This way FrameMaker has a location that a Crash Recovery File can be stored to. I've personally had some environments where a crash Recovery File has recovered information even if I've made edits and changes for several hours at a time. The Crash Recovery File's assigned default name based on your file name. The extension recovery.fm is added by FrameMaker to the file, therefore, if you're working with a document named, for example, overview.fm the Crash Recovery File would be overview.recovery.fm. Let's take a look at a Crash Recovery File. If I go in and I choose File, Open and then I select a document that had previously crashed, for example Mexico and by the way you can see that Mexico.recovery.fm is there; select the document, I click Open. I'm now immediately prompted by FrameMaker that a crash recovery file exists for Mexico.fm. If I choose to open it then the most recent changes in the Crash Recovery File are displayed on screen. Any time that you open the recovery file make sure you inspect it carefully before you save. Any content that you've changed, any edits that you've made, are in that Recovery File and in some cases you may have made changes that you don't actually want to save so be very careful before you overwrite a Source File with any Crash Recovery File.
