Adobe FrameMaker 9 Overview / Compatibility Preferences

Subtitles of the Movie

In this video tutorial we're going to explore the Compatibility Preferences that are available inside FrameMaker. To get to this, choose File, Preferences and General and take a look on the bottom portion where the Compatibility Preferences are. Unless explicitly told to set the Cross-Platform File Naming to something other than Windows I definitely recommend not changing this one. The same with the option for Save FrameImage with Imported Graphics. However, network File Locking and Remember Missing Font Names both have reasons to configure them. Let's start by exploring the idea of Network File Locking. When File Locking is selected a temporary file is created and it notifies a user who tries to open it that someone else is already accessing the document. This temporary LCK, or lock file, is deleted whenever you close your file. Now, if FrameMaker crashes and a Lock File exists it may be prompted the file is in use. If this is the situation, you need to reset the Lock. The alternative is to go and delete all of the Lock Files from the Source Folder containing documents that may have been locked when FrameMaker crashed. The Lock File's assigned a default name based on your file name. The extension .lck is added to the file, therefore, if you're working with a document named overview.fm, the Lock File is assigned a default name based on your file name. The extension .lck is added to the file, therefore if you're working with a document named overview.fm, the Lock File name of overview.fm.lck is automatically created. If you're working in a multi-user environment it's a good idea to have the Network File Locking on. If multiple people are trying to work with files inside a given Folder location on a server, this is a great way to ensure two people don't open up files, work with them and have conflicting changes that are saved back to the original document. Let's take a look at the Remember Missing Font Names as well. If you're working with a document and you don't have all of the Fonts, when you open it up the Remember Missing Font Names will substitute a Font temporarily. You'll get a message that says Fonts do not exist; you'll have an opportunity to see which Fonts are being substituted and you can work with the document. When you save the file, all of the missing Font information is retained. That means that if somebody who worked with the original document reopens it, the correct Fonts are applied instead of a permanent substitution. If this checkbox is deselected and you open a file, you'll still be informed the Fonts are missing, but the substitution becomes permanent. This setting is dependent on the type of files that you're working with. If you need to replace the Fonts and you do want the change to be permanent, definitely turn this checkbox off. However, because I do a lot of work with files from clients where I may get them from a support role, or I may get the documents to work with for conversion, I always ensure that the Remember Missing Font Names is on on my machine. That way what I return to my client is exactly the same Font style that was given to me in the first place. So, Compatibility Preferences, Cross-Platform File Naming and Save FrameImage, I'd suggest definitely leave those with the defaults unless explicitly told not to. Consider using Network File Lock if your files are ever shared on a network and you're accessing them at generally the same types of times that other people may access them and Remember Missing Font Names, something that you'll decide based on the type of content that you're working with. Finally, I want to mention the Product Interface. All of the tutorials that we're doing are based on the FrameMaker Interface, but there is also a Structured FrameMaker environment. FrameMaker is generally used in an unstructured environment where you do not work with things like XML, SGML, or DITA-based content. Structured FrameMaker is ideal if you're working with XML, SGML and DITA materials. For our purpose, make sure that you leave it on the FrameMaker environment. If you change the product Interface and you click Set, you'll be asked to re-launch FrameMaker because it will change the Toolbar options and some of the functionality of the Application. In my case I'm going to click Cancel in order to ensure none of the changes that I've shown you are applied.
