Adobe FrameMaker 9 Overview / Pods
Subtitles of the Movie
In this video tutorial we're going to explore the Pods and Panels that are available inside Adobe FrameMaker 9. Now what you see onscreen is going to be configured based on whatever workspace you happen to select up here. If I choose my Managing Content you'll see that a variety of different things outside of my document window change. For example, this space here and then also down here at the bottom of the screen. So, by changing my workspace, in this case I'm going to the Review Workspace, I set up a Default Appearance and that may include a variety of different Panels and Pods. If I move in over something like the Paragraph Designer and I click, it expands the Designer and shows me all of the choices available in it and I can do the same with the Character Designer or the Table Designer. Note also that at the top I see the name Paragraph Designer, Character Designer, or Table Designer and it's another way I can work my way through these. Clicking this little double arrow collapses things away. So, to expand simply click, to collapse click again; or, if you're working your way through you can select a specific set of options by clicking on the words as buttons, or clicking on the words as titles. You can collapse or expand in a variety of different ways based on what your User Preference is. I also have a set of more detailed Pods running across the bottom and that displays things like my Variables, my Markers, any Conditions that may exist, Cross-references, or Insets including Text Insets and Images. These Pods display a lot more information about content. For example, my Variables gives me a list of all of the variables that are available whereas my Add-Edit Variable gives me a fly-out that gives a variety of choices but not necessarily an at-a-glance overview of what's inside my document for what's available. And I'm just going to close these off and move down here to the Variables Title. If I need to get more real estate I can take the Pods and just double-click on one of the Titles to collapse it. If I want to see what's inside here, for example for Markers, I can just click on it. Again, double-click to collapse and single-click on one of these in order to expand it. If it's the currently selected one, you'll have to double-click it and you can also collapse it by single-clicking in this neutral gray space. A great deal of what's onscreen can also be configured. For example, if I open up my Paragraph Designer I can move into the Title that reads Paragraph Designer and I can drag and drop this in order to pull it away from the Panel that it's currently in and make it into a floating one. I can also take a variety of floating pieces and combine them together by dragging and dropping until one is in the other and you can see a bit of a blue highlight in the background. This then allows me to group them together and now I can move all of this as one large object. In the neutral gray I can also right mouse-click and I can do things like Minimize in order to collapse my titles, or single-click to collapse. If I have a variety of them and I've opened them up I can also come in and do things like Collapse to Icons, or Expand my Panels. If I click the X in the corner I can collapse everything and, again, a relatively quick tip in order to reset is to Reset your Workspace and choose OK. That puts everything back where it was originally. In another tutorial we explore how to create your own Workspaces and that's one of the really great values of FrameMaker 9: building and configuring your own environment to work in. Finally, a lot of these options are also available under the View Menu by choosing things like: View Pods and specifying the Markers Pod, or View Pods and specifying the Insets. If you go in under your traditional menus and you choose things like Format, Paragraph Designer, it also opens up the Paragraph Designer even if it had been previously collapsed. Again, by going in and working with Workspaces you're far better positioned to have exactly what you want configured the way that you want it to appear.
