Adobe FrameMaker 9 Overview / New Files (Landscape/Portrait/Custom)

Subtitles of the Movie

In this tutorial. we explore how to create new files. Any new file is going to be either based on a Template, which may or may not have basic text to get you started, or on an existing file, which is usually opened, saved with a new name, and then modified. All Templates have some pre-defined formats for content, such as Paragraphs, Characters, Tables, Headers and Footers and so on. In addition, the Template may have text to get you started. You can type over the placeholder text in an existing document and add new content as needed. When you create a new document you may choose to create a new Page based on the defaults of the application. If so, you can specify how large you want the page to be and how you want the pages oriented. To do this you can either use a Default Page Size, Customize your own, or choose a Template with specialized page sizes and formats. Two default blank pages are included: Portrait, with the long sides vertical and Landscape with the long sides horizontal. The Default Page Size depends on whether the U.S. English or International English is selected during the installation of FrameMaker. The U.S. English option defaults to the U.S. Letter Page size of 8 and a half by 11; and International English defaults to the A4 Page size of 21 centimeter by 29.7 centimeter. To create a new document based on either of these Templates, simply click Document under Create New. In the dialog choose either Portrait or choose Landscape. In this case I'm using the Portrait document and I'm just going to change my Zoom setting so that you can see the entire page. So in this case, the standard 8 and a half by 11 page is created. When I go in and I choose File, New, Document and I select Landscape, a standard 8 and a half by 11 page is created. You also have the option when you're creating a new page to choose any type of a standard page layout, or to go in and create a custom page layout. If I choose to create a New Document based on a Custom Page I can configure a default starting page size based on U.S. Letter, Legal, Tabloids, A3, A4, A5 and so on page sizes. Once selected I can also choose the number of columns that I want to work with, whether it's a single-sided or a double-sided document and note that in a double-sided document the inside and the outside margins are displayed, whereas in a single-sided document left and right margins are displayed. Once the Custom Page is set up with the specified number of columns and a defined left and right margin, click Create and again a new page is created. Zooming out you can see the entire page layout. The drawback to working with any of these pages is that they're based on the default installation of FrameMaker and may not necessarily meet your exact needs. Instead, you can also create pages using a variety of Templates, either Templates that are provided with the application or custom Templates that may be created inside your corporate environment.
