Adobe FrameMaker 9 Overview / Getting Started

Subtitles of the Movie

In this video tutorial we're going to take you through the basics of getting started with Adobe FrameMaker 9. This is based on the default installation of the software. In Windows you click Start, choose All Programs and from the suboption select Adobe FrameMaker 9. Branching off of that you should see the Icon for FM and the Adobe FrameMaker 9 Text. When you click it, FrameMaker is launched. When the software's first launched, a FrameMaker dialog displays and it asks you to choose the Interface. You can choose FrameMaker, or Structured FrameMaker. FrameMaker is the Interface used if you don't plan to work with XML or SGML and that's what we're assuming for this tutorial Structured FrameMaker is the Interface that you use if you're planning to work with XML or SGML Standards, including things like DocBook, S1000D, DITA and so on. An easy way to tell which Interface you're using is to check your menus. If the menu options include things like Element, Structure Tools and DITA, you're in the Structured Interface. It's not a big deal if you are in that Interface because you can switch back and forth between both of them with relative ease. In addition, the Structured Interface is a Superset of the default FrameMaker Interface, so everything that we're discussing is going to be able to be accomplished regardless of the Interface that you're using. Once FrameMaker's been launched and you see a screen similar to what's shown here, you can click Document under Create New in order to get the New Document dialog. I'm just going to Cancel that and show a couple other ways to display it. Another method is to use Ctrl-N. This brings up the New dialog and again I'm going to Cancel it and show you the last method that you can use. From your Menus, you can choose File, New and Document. And once more I'm going to Cancel the dialog. Rather than creating a new document you can also go in and Open, Recent Files that you may have worked with. Once more I'm going to Cancel this. And you can also access the same options under File, Open; or by pressing Ctrl-O. Regardless of what you decide to do, creating new documents or using any existing document, when you're done working with the application, save your files, close them and then exit FrameMaker by choosing File, Exit.
