Subtitles of the Movie
In this video tutorial I'm going to give you background on the Adobe FrameMaker 9 conceptual model. The application can be used with one of two main workflows. One workflow includes support for traditional publishing, including the creation of book, chapter, appendix, front matter, index and other common print content. Another workflow is for structured authoring and supports standards such as S100D, DocBook and DITA. FrameMaker can be used to create documents including standalone files and complete books that adhere to a Template specification including page layout, paragraph design, table appearances and more. Books are composed of multiple documents which contain a variety of pages. Each document has unique content, usually entered by the user of the application - the author. Some content is similar between pages, such as Headers, Footers, Watermarks and are usually inserted in a Template created by a designer. Unique page content may include graphics, text, tables, or any other combination of this material. FrameMaker does support structured writing, including a specification known as DITA. If using DITA the application can be used to create concepts that adhere to the DITA specification including the map, topic, concept, reference and task. Regardless of the decision to use the unstructured or structured interface, many formatting decisions are implemented in a very similar fashion. Formatting is attached to content using internal formatting instructions specified by the Template designer. This is done by a combination of paragraph, character and table designers, as well as the Master Page and Reference Page. There are other design and layout tools available that are also used by a Template developer. FrameMaker has a full set of word processing capabilities for things like Text Editing, Spell Checking, Thesaurus, Find and Replace, Paragraph and Character Formatting, Rich Table Support, Templates that can be used to standardize the appearance of content and Revision Management. The application also has many features that are unique to a publishing system. This allows you to create complex manuals, such as Software User Guides, Annual Reports, Hardware Maintenance Manuals, Service and Revision Reports, large professional publications such as Corporate Directories, Encyclopedias, Dictionaries and so on. Another format-rich content, through the use of functionality such as its flexible page design, the graphic and text layout tools, visual guides for object placement, custom page sizes, the ability to automatically mix Landscape and Portrait pages, the ability to create Text Frames and Text Lines and the capability to import graphics from multiple sources. There are also features unique to high-end publishing systems, such as Book Building, generating automatically Table of Contents and Index material, Revision Management, Professional Color Control, the ability to create multiple versions of a document, have automatic hypertext links and even insert typeset mathematical equations. Because of this support for publishing, FrameMaker is considered to be one of the default tools in technical communication. The application is used widely around the world and is one of the leading products recommended by organizations like the STC. Learning how to correctly use Templates in Adobe FrameMaker is likely one of the first things that needs to be done for anyone who wants to be a professional in the technical communications field.
