Adobe FrameMaker 9 Overview / Application Overview

In this video tutorial I'm going to provide a brief Application Overview for Adobe FrameMaker 9. Conceptually, FrameMaker's used to create book documents and the book documents are made up of a variety of content, such as a Table of Contents, Chapters, Appendices, Indexes and more. FrameMaker supports both unstructured and structured publishing. It has a rich set of formatting functions, as well as powerful word processing capabilities, publishing features that are applicable to both unstructured and structured writing. When you first launch the FrameMaker software you will be prompted to choose an interface. Best Practice for the tutorials that we're working with is to use FrameMaker, but if you're prompted and you choose Structured FrameMaker, you can toggle back and forth between them. When you create new files you can either create blank documents or you can use default-existing Templates provided by the application. There's also the possibility to use Custom Templates that have been created for your environment. Early on it's likely best to start off working with existing Templates. This allows you to create content that's based on a company standard. FrameMaker files can be saved, closed, opened, printed and managed in the same fashion as most word processing tools allow. The interface has a default appearance, but can be completely customized. Customizing may take a little while but it's well worth it because you end up having exactly what you want on screen. Once you've configured it you can save these workspaces and apply them as needed. FrameMaker also has a full set of User Compatibility Preferences that you should set up early. You can set Viewing Preferences as far as documents are concerned on a per-file basis, but the User Preferences apply to the entire application. There's also the ability to recover files from a crash and to revert to the last saved version of a document. These File Management features are defaults inside the application. Finally, FrameMaker also supports a very rich print environment and the ability to create documents that are PDF files and retain all of the functionality that the Source FrameMaker documents have in them.
