Languages and Structures / About SGML

Subtitles of the Movie

SGML - let's talk about that a little bit more, starting off with where you can find out more information about it, at www.w3.org/markup/sgml. The w3org, or the World Wide Web consortium, is the organization that is often calling the shots on what languages are widely being used. They are the ones that kind of dictate what is the standard. Now taking a look over here, SGML is the standard generalized markup language. It is standard for how you specify a document markup language or a tag set. So such a specification is itself a document type definition, it is a declaration. You can see a document type definition or DTD in a HTML document as well. It is not actual code that structures a document, but it is a declaration, it declares the type of document that is being created. SGML is not in itself a document language, but a description of how to specify one - this is very important to understand. It is metadata - like in our previous lesson we did metadata for a Framemaker file; that is descriptive information in regards to your file. Well SGML is the same way, but it is coded, it is coded inside the document. So to sum it up, SGML itself is not a document language, however it is descriptive and allows you to specify or have specifications for your document. So the DTD declares the actual document, you can see it in HTML. At the top of any HTML document you can actually see the DTD or document type definition. And often that specifies the language that it is being written in - the version of HTML. So there’s often information that is descriptive towards a document, it is not structural code, it is actually descriptive code, describing what the document actually is. So understand that it is not actually a language, it's more of a descriptive language for describing parts of your document - so keep that in mind. ribing parts of your document - so keep that in mind.
