Basics of Working With FrameMaker / Colors
Subtitles of the Movie
Let's talk about colors, starting off with what is called process colors. Just to make you understand, process colors are made up of four colors, hence the name four colored process. The four colors that are used for printing typically are cyan, magenta, yellow and of course black. These four colors are used to print a document, a combination of these four. Now dealing with the web, you have red, green and blue. These three colors use light off your monitor to actually create some of the color. It mixes red, green and blue in varying intensities in order to create the onscreen image - but dealing with red, green and blue is often onscreen. Then you have spot colors - spot color is usually one individual ink or each color is printed with its own ink. In contrast, process colors in printing use four color inks, cyan, magenta, yellow and black, to produce all other colors. Spot color printing is effective and the printed matter contains only one to three different colors, but it becomes prohibitively expensive for more colors - Pantone is the most widely used, and that's a color matching system. When you are doing a four color job, or a four color project, make sure you are in CMYK mode, it’s very important, and not in spot color mode. This could cause a problem - I have seen it cause problems with people using Quark Express. They were using spot colors instead of CMYK and they had thirty or forty spot colors, which is unnecessary. And just remember that using colors for the web, all web files are made up of the red, green and blue. You don't ever want to use red, green and blue for printing. Often enough, if you have the RGB image and you send it to the printer, it could crash the printer's machines. It is a good rule of thumb to never use red, green and blue or RGB files for printing. So never use RGB for printing. Often enough I have seen it lead to several problems with the printer that you send it to. Process colors again are four colors, so know your color system before dealing with certain types of projects. know your color system before dealing with certain types of projects.
