Basics of Working With FrameMaker / Opening Files

Subtitles of the Movie

Let's observe how we can actually open a file - let's go to file and then open. We are going to look for professional memo.dot - then we are going to go ahead and click open. As you can see, I can open all the file types - click open. This is the convert window, it is allowing me to convert different types of files. We are going to take a look at all the different files, starting off with the top: AMI Professional; AMI Professional 231; DCA; Lotus; Excel; Word, all the different versions; Word for Mac; MIF; MML; RTF Japanese; Ventura Publisher; WordPerfect. And the one that we are looking to do is Microsoft Word. I’m going to click convert and the document opens up as an FM, Framemaker. I’m going to go to view and uncheck text symbols. Text symbols show paragraph markers and other types of symbols for your document. Now this right here is called greeking, when you can't read the type. But when you zoom in, you can actually read it - so it's not your monitor playing tricks. I am going to uncheck text symbols - you could see I could select this little box here; deselect object tool. I am going to type something here and you won't be able to read it because it is greeked, which basically means when the type is really small, it shows a low resolution version of the text. You know the copy is actually there, but you can't read it and that's called greeked. These are your tab markers, these little arrows that you can see up top here. I am going to select the word 'audience'; click here to go to my next menu; and choose underline. I am going to select the word 'memo', and decrease the size because I feel it is too bulky - and there you go. You can open several types of files and convert them with Framemaker. n several types of files and convert them with Framemaker.
