Deploying Flash Video / Deploying Video with Flash pt. 1

Subtitles of the Movie

In this tutorial I'm going to provide an overview of deploying video with the Flash Authoring Tool, and in particular, using components. And the three main tools within the Flash Authoring environment that we use with components are: the Components Panel, the Component Inspector, and the Properties Panel. And while we're deploying video with the components, we're also going to be observing the relationship between the Flash Player version that you want to support, the ActionScript version that you can use, and that implies something about the components. So, in particular, if you only need to support Flash Player 9 or higher, you can use ActionScript 3.0, and that tends to be faster and more efficient, and it also gives you the option of supporting full-screen playback. If you need to support Flash Players 6, 7, or 8, you have to use ActionScript 2.0, and each version of ActionScript has its own components. They may be similar, but they're not exactly the same. So, let's just take a look at this quickly. Go to File, New, and I'll start off by choosing ActionScript 3.0. So now I'm in an ActionScript 3.0 project. Go to Window, Components, and here I have a whole list of components: FLV Playback, FLV Playback Captioning, and so on. So, let's drag an FLV Playback component to the stage and I'll just get out of the Components Panel there and go to the Component Inspector. So this shows me the properties associated with this component. And notice, for example, that the file that we're going to load, the FLV file, is listed here as Source. Let's just get out of that, and I'll just show you the properties panel here. This is what we use just to position and size the component and give it an instance name. So, now let's open an ActionScript 2.0 project. Choose ActionScript 2.0, and click OK. Again, bring up the Components Panel. Notice that there's no Captioning component here. That's not supported in ActionScript 2.0. So once again, let's drag this to the stage and get out of this and go to the Component Inspector. And here you'll notice that the name of the file is listed under Content Path. So, that's just one small example of the difference between these two components in the Component Inspector. And also, we can go to the Properties Panel and that's exactly the same. So, that's just a brief introduction to deploying video with the Flash Authoring Tool, the Components Panel, the Component Inspector, the Properties Panel, and the relationship of the players to the ActionScript version that you can use. And in the next tutorial, we'll go ahead and deploy a video using ActionScript 3.0.
