In this tutorial we're going to be looking at some of the basic options for deploying Flash video, some of the basic ways, that is, that Flash video can be deployed, and also some basic tools, the software that you might use to deploy Flash video, and then we'll be looking at each of these tools and options in a little more detail in coming tutorials. For deploying Flash video you basically have two options on the Client and two options on the Server. So, let's look at the Client side first. On the client, and this is the Macintosh or PC where the Flash player is running. The two options are either Embedded video or External video. In Embedded video, one SWF file contains both the video footage itself and also the player. And you'll actually see the video on the Flash Timeline in the Authoring Tool. In External video, the video is external to the SWF, and the SWF just contains the player. So in this case the SWF can be much smaller because it just needs to contain the player. Here the SWF tends to be larger because it contains both the player and the video. When you're using external video you have two different server architectures that you can use: Progressive Download and Streaming. Progressive Download implies that you're going to be using an ordinary Web server to deliver the video. Streaming implies that you're going to be using a specialized video server, such as the Flash Media Server, to deliver the video. Some of the most common software tools for deploying Flash video are Dreamweaver, the Flash Authoring Tool, which is the software that I'm in right now, SWFObject, and Express Install. And again, we'll be looking at each one of these tools and the options for deploying Flash video in coming tutorials.
