Creating Simple Graphics / Brush Tool

Subtitles of the Movie

I'll now review how to paint with the Brush Tool. The Brush Tool, located here underneath the Basic Geometric Shapes Tool draws brush-like strokes as if you were painting. You can create some special effects with this tool including Calligraphy effects. Notice that down here you have a variety of options once the Brush Tool is selected, including the Brush Shape as well as the Brush Size. And one thing you'll need to remember is that the Brush Size for new strokes remains constant, even when you change the magnification level for the Stage, so even though I'm zooming in here and it appears as if these brush strokes are larger, I'm just magnified in. If you double-click on the Magnifying Glass right here, the Zoom Tool, that'll bring you back to 100 percent. Notice that there's a drop-down here that also lets you set the magnification of the zoom level on the Stage. If you have a pressure sensitive tablet connected to your computer, vary the width and angle of the brush stroke by using the Brush Tool Pressure and Tilt Modifiers and verifying the pressure on the stylus. The Pressure Modifier varies the width of the brush strokes when you vary the pressure on the stylus. The Tilt Modifier varies the angle of brush strokes when you vary the angle of the stylus on the tablet. The Tilt Modifier measures the angle between the top or the eraser end of the stylus and the top or north edge of the tablet. For example, if you hold the pen vertically against the tablet the Tilt is 90 percent, or 90. The Pressure and Tilt Modifiers are both fully supported for the eraser functions of the stylus as well. Here's an example of a variable width brush stroke drawn with a stylus connected to a computer, so you'll notice the variable widths here, depending on the pressure and the angle again of the stylus to the pad. There are some other options here for the Brush Tool including some interesting painting modes right here, that's what this Brush Mode, as it's referred to in the Tools Panel. Paint Normal paints over lines and fills on the same layer. Let me go ahead and to demonstrate this, let's create a graphic with both Strokes, both a Stroke and a Fill here. So, Paint Normal will paint over lines and fills on the same layer. Let's go ahead and change my stroke color to a nice bright purple. So, here's Paint Normal. Paint Fills is the next option. Notice just paints over the Fill will not paint over the Stroke. Paint Behind paints in blank areas of the Stage on the same layer, leaving Lines and Fills both unaffected, so let's go ahead and try Paint Behind, and see that it will leave everything that's already there untouched. Paint Selection applies a new Fill to the selection when you select a Fill in the Fill Color Control, or the Fill Box of the Property Inspector. This is the same as selecting a filled area and applying a new fill to it, so if we select an area Ð let's draw a marquee there Ð and then select the Mode here in the Brush Tool to Paint Selection, it'll only paint the area that is selected, and then Paint Inside paints the Fill in which you start a brush stroke and never paints lines. Let me demonstrate that, so it only fills, if I start inside of that Fill Object. Notice if I start outside the Fill Object it doesn't paint in there. Actually let's delete this. Let's draw out a new box there. Let's change the Fill Color, something light, and change my Pen Color to something dark, and change the Mode there to Paint Inside, and notice that it doesn't paint unless I start inside of that Fill there, and it doesn't paint the Stroke. If you start painting in an empty area, the Fill doesn't affect any existing filled areas, like so. It's a little bit tricky. This takes some practice, so I'd recommend that you just make a Mask like I've done here to really get a handle on these various options for the tools here in the Flash Tools Panel. So, there you have an overview summary of the Brush Tool. Let me now move on to the next movie and demonstrate the Pen Tool.
