Creating Simple Graphics / Fills

Subtitles of the Movie

And I'll go over in more detail how to work with Fills in Flash CS4. You'll create Fills with the Brush and Paint Bucket Tools. Here I have some objects with no fills, just strokes. I did that using the Rectangle, or Oval Primitive, Rectangle Primitive, or Polystar Tool. Here I've chosen the Rectangle and I can click on the Fill Color tab, or Color Chip here in the Properties Inspector and select this Icon right there which represents No Fill. So I can go ahead and create a shape with no fill, then I can use the Paint Bucket to fill those shapes with the colors specified here in the Fill Color Chip here, either in the Tools Panel or the Properties Inspector here, so notice that I'm going to change that to green. Notice also that when I change it here in the Tools Panel it changes over here in the Properties Window as well. You can also create Fills without strokes. Let's go ahead and select the Rectangle Tool and this time let's choose the Stroke Color and select the Null or None option and go ahead and draw out a rectangle, and there is the rectangle without the Stroke, and I'll go ahead and select all of these by drawing a Marquee around them and then pressing the Delete key. Let me go ahead and demonstrate now how to use the Brush Tool to create Fills. Select the Rectangle Tool, not the Marquee Tool, the Rectangle Tool, and then here is the Brush Tool, change the Fill Color to green and I can now modify that Fill using the Brush. Now, there are several modifiers down here that you should familiarize yourself, including the Brush Shape, but more importantly here, the Brush Mode: Paint Normal, Paint Fills, Paint Behind, will give you different options. Notice that nothing is happening here because I can't paint behind that object, but I can paint directly on the Stage. Other options here for the Paint Selection, if I go ahead and select a portion using the Lasso Tool, for example, I've selected that portion, now I'm going to take the Brush Tool and paint just the selection. Notice if I move around the selection it only paints inside that selection there. There are other modes: Paint Inside, Paint Fills, and so on. So, spend some time experimenting with these various modes for each of the tools. This one I've just demonstrated a few of the modes for the Brush Tool. Once you have some Fills you can modify the fills using the Paint Bucket as I demonstrated previously, but also the Color and Tool Modifiers in the Toolbar over here, the Color Mixer Panel, or using the Properties Inspector. So, there you have an overview summary of the difference between Strokes and Fills and how to modify each with different tools in the Tool Panel. Now, you'll notice for some tools, there's an additional modifier right here called Object Drawing. There are actually two different drawing modes in Flash: Objects versus Merge Drawings, and you'll toggle back and forth between these two using this Object Drawing option. Not all the tools have Object or Merge Drawing Modes, but the Line Tool does Ð there's the modifier Ð the Rectangle Tool, the Pencil Tool, the Brush Tool, and the Deco Tool. So, let me now move on to the next movie and review in more detail the Object versus Merge Drawing models in Flash CS4.
