About this Course / What is Flash & Why Use It?
Subtitles of the Movie
So what is Flash and why spend hours learning how to use it? Flash is a powerful authoring tool, ideal for creating a variety of media rich presentations and applications ranging from online games, greeting cards, web pages, playing back audio or video or even an information portal. Flash makes it snap to create applications containing pictures, sound, video and special effects using either simple animations or more complex interactive and self contained Flash movie components. Flash is especially well suited for creating content to be delivered over the Internet because its files are very small. Flash achieves this through the extensive use of vector graphics which require significantly less memory and storage space then the more common bitmap graphics. Even a short visit to Adobe's website demonstrating various examples of Flash content will convince you I'm sure of the power and versatility of this amazing tool. As you can see from these examples Flash makes it possible to create rich, engaging, presentations that download fast and that give you strong control of both the visual and audio elements. It also provides high degree of scalability. You can resize in many cases your Flash presentations or publications and the project will scale or resize without distorting the image. Flash also makes it possible to stream contents such as video or audio. Almost everyday it seems my students and colleagues show me Flash work and websites that continuously push the envelope of what can be done with this tool. Although it started out as a simple animation tool it's now more of an authoring environment or development environment. Complete with components, media streaming tools, internal scripting language, tight integration with other graphic tools such as Photoshop, illustrator and Fireworks. It's simply the best tool around if you have something that you wish to communicate without having to get a degree in computer science, or spend years trying to learn an arcane computer language.
