Introduction / About the Included Sample Scripts
Subtitles of the Movie
Included in this tutorial. is a Work Files folder where you'll find example Flash fla files complete with working scripts. This is perhaps the best aspect of this Tutorial as I've gone through great efforts and lengths and trouble as well as energy in assembling these various Work Files for you to look at and inspect and learn from. Many of the files that I use to demonstrate the scripting techniques covered in the tutorial movie are here plus additional files to supplement your studies. Files are named in accordance with the section or name of the movie they were used for. For example, to have a look at the fla file used in the movie covering how to script custom cursors, open the fla file entitled custom underscore cursor.fla, down here you'll find that - custom underscore cursor, right there. All the files used in the XML Slideshow project are located here in the XML Slideshow folder including additional subfolders in here. All the game examples, the Flash game examples, are located in the games folder. The audio folder contains a set of MP3 songs that you'll need to use to get your audio scripts working. You'll find these working files very helpful in your efforts to learn ActionScripting. In many cases you'll want to use these fla, swf, HTML, or as, ActionScript, files to work along with my demonstrations in a particular movie. Use them to practice techniques covered in the movies to see how the author of the movie has set up scripts, layer stacks, libraries, instance properties and much, much more. This is really the best way to learn ActionScripting is to use existing scripts that are well-formatted, well-structured, logical and that are probably, more importantly, working. Many files were chosen or created to demonstrate and instruct on a specific ActionScript skill or technique. I've included them here in the Work Files folder to give you more help in mastering this information. You'll want to copy the scripts exactly as presented making sure you have no logic, syntax, or typing errors. Once you get everything working then you'll want to start modifying and experimenting with the provided scripts, expanding or changing their scope and functionality. You can expect to be copying and modifying existing working scripts like these that I've provided for some time. It's only at the intermediate levels that I find my students are able to start writing anything but the most simple of scripts on their own from scratch, so be patient with yourself. Start your studies by first understanding fully an already working script from those that I've provided for you in the Work Files folder and then start modifying it, but only after you've gotten the existing script or the script as I've written it working perfectly. Continue to modify and customize a given script until you break it then move on to troubleshooting mode to try to fix the errors that you've created. Often this fixing part of the process will teach you more than when everything works as expected. Besides, if things get messed up beyond fixing or control you could always start over fresh from the last working version of the script, or if all else fails you can just open up the original version that I've saved for you here in the Work Files folder and start from there. But for now, go ahead and move on to the next movie and learn about what I'm assuming you already know about Flash in order to be successful with this ActionScript 3.0 tutorial.
