The Fireworks Workspace / Saving Fireworks Files
Subtitles of the Movie
When you create a new document in Fireworks or open an existing Fireworks PNG file, the document's file name will have the extension PNG, notice that I have a PSD file right here and if I choose File, Save as, the default format is the Fireworks PNG or PNG. Files of other types including PSD and HTML also will open as PNG files allowing you to use the Fireworks PNG document as your source file or working file. However, you can save these files in different file formats including BMP, GIF, Animated GIF, Illustrator, JPEG, Flash, Flattened PNG, Photoshop, TIF, and WBMP. These other file types will retain their original file name extensions and optimization settings when opened in Fireworks. If you then make changes to these documents using the tools and capabilities that are unique to Fireworks such as slices, behaviors, symbols, and others, you'll want to save the file in the Fireworks native file format PNG which will preserve all of these added feature and capabilities. So one of the reasons to use Flash is to employ the Slices tool to slice up various sections of the document, that's the slice tool right there or to add behaviors, to optimize various sections of the document, none of those features will be supported in these other very popular file formats such as GIF or JPEG or PSD. So you'll want to make sure that your working files are saved as PNG if you're using any of the various Fireworks capabilities that I'll be covering in this tutorial. Now there's an important distinction between saving a file and exporting a file in Fireworks so let me go into that a little bit. When you're getting ready to save this file for presentation in a web browser, let's say you're going to bring this file into Dreamweaver or Flash perhaps, you don't want to save the file because this PNG format is not supported in various browsers, what you'll want to do instead is File, Export the file or even better probably Export wizard the first time you export the file run through the wizard which I'll be covering in detail a little bit later. This PNG file that you'll create by doing File, Save or Save as should go to your working files folder, not your local root folder, you'll set up a local root folder where all of your web based images and other content such as SWF file, JPEGs, GIFs, maybe some script files, JavaScript files or ActionScript files and other files you need to put to your host to get your website working, you'll put those into your root folder. These PNG files which are working files, they're not going to be the final version of this graphic, you'll want to save this file in a Work Files folder or some other location where you'll remember not to upload this file to your web host. For example, this file here with some working navigation animations will not work as a PNG file. This animation will not work if you upload this file to your host because you'll need to export this to separate out all of the JavaScript that makes these animations work with your, probably this is going to be a GIF image as well as an accompanying html file that will need to be reassembled on your host to get all this to work. So once you're finished editing this PNG file you would go ahead and choose the File Export or Export Wizard to prepare this for web delivery. If you're not yet done with this file, let's say you want to add some labels or you want to change the animation save this file as a PNG file, File Save as or Save and that would then go to your Work Files folder, the exported version would go to your local root folder. More on this topic of exporting later in the tutorial when I talk about publishing. That will conclude this movie about saving Fireworks files and how this is different from exporting files, that will also conclude this section of the tutorial on the Fireworks work space, we have learned about the various Fireworks panels and windows, about vector and bitmap graphics, and how to open, import, save, and export Fireworks files.
