Getting Started / New Features pt. 1
Subtitles of the Movie
If you have an older version of Fireworks there are a number of reasons to upgrade to the CS4 version including tabbed interfaces that allow you to work more efficiently, with multiple documents opened up all at the same time, notice I have multiple documents here and to move back and forth between them I just simply click on the tab with the file name up there at the top, notice that my workspace stays the same allowing me to very efficiently and conveniently work across many documents and jump to these open documents very easily. You also have expanded mode for windows panels over here, you may have noticed these panels over here to the right as well as a new interface up here for moving between iconic mode with panel names, expanded mode so I can actually see the contents of each of the panels, notice that this is taking up quite a bit of screen real estate so I can also move into iconic mode where I just have icons of the panels, no names, probably my favorite is iconic mode with panel names which is the default. You also have some new guide tools, notice that if you drag a guide down from the ruler at the top you get a little tool tip that tells you how far you have dragged it, notice that that's 200 pixels down from the top as well as over here from the left, that's 200 pixels from the left. Also if you hold down the Shift key you'll get additional tool tips, for example, this tells me that I'm 236 pixels from the edge or 400 pixels from the top. Notice if I click right here I get two extra tool tips, I'm 198 pixels from the top and 400 pixels from the left edge so that's a nice neat tool, new tool for helping you get more information from your guides. You also have new ways of working with styles. In addition to the styles item right here in the iconic mode with panel names, notice that if you open up the styles window you have this dropdown window where you can see any current styles, as well as look through the styles of any open documents, there is the styles for Untitled 1 and I can go ahead and apply styles also very easily, let's go ahead and draw out a rectangle there and then open up my dropdown menu at the top of my styles panel and let's choose text creative styles, let's go ahead and select my title up here and apply a text style to that, so it's just new ways of working with your styles, also symbol editing mode now works much the same way as it works in Flash, so notice if I have a symbol here and I double click on it, this is a button symbol, and it opens up kind of a button editor that I can control here in the Property Inspector, rather than having a button window or button panel I now edit right here, right on the canvas, let's go ahead and move to the over stage and I can go ahead and perhaps add a new wood style to that over or change the color on the edge there, so notice that I'm editing this on the canvas itself and then modifying it here in the Property Inspector. Notice up here it tells me I'm in Symbol editing mode instead of on page 1, very similar to the way that you would edit symbols and button symbols in particular in Flash. Let's go ahead and move to the down state and let's copy the over graphic there so it's very much easier working with symbols in the CS4 version of Fireworks over the CS3 version. CS4 also has a new Paths panel as we can see here from the panel stack here for working with your vector images including tools for combining paths, altering paths, editing the points of paths or select points here. Fireworks CS4 now makes it easy to insert lorem ipsum placeholder text by dragging out a textbox like so, clicking inside the text box and then choosing from the main menu, Command, Text, Lorem ipsum and it will put in the text in the color and size that you specify here in the Property Inspector in this case it's black 20 pt but you can past in as much as you need. Now, in addition to being able to attach text to a path like I have here, you can also attach text in a path, let me go ahead and undo or detach from the path here and with my two object selected, my text and my path, now let's choose Attach in path and you can see that the text is inside of that path there and I can modify how it's presented by adjusting my path and the text will always stay inside of that path there. Let me continue in the next movie demonstrating new features in Fireworks CS4.
