Creating Vector Graphics / Using Auto Shapes

Subtitles of the Movie

Let me now review Auto Shapes. Auto Shapes are intelligent vector object groups that adhere to specialized rules to simplify the creation and editing of common visual elements. I have some examples of Auto Shapes here; arrows and chamfer rectangles and edges and donuts. You can access these Auto Shape Tools here in the Vector Section underneath the Line Tool. There's a drop-down menu here starting with the arrow, proceeding down to arrow, line, donut, L-shape and then ending with a star. Auto Shape Tools draw object groups. Unlike other object groups, however, selected Auto Shapes have diamond-shaped control points in addition to the object group handles. Each of these control points is associated with a particular visual property of the shape. Dragging a control point alters only the associated visual property. For example, I take the Selection Tool and click on my donut. Notice that there's two diamond little control points there that I can see; one for controlling the diameter of the inner circle, one for the diameter of the outer circle and another one for the angle of the donut itself. Likewise, I have control points here that allow me to change the chamfer of this rectangle or with this L-shape I have one for extending the horizontal arm, one for extending the vertical arm, another for controlling the thickness of the L or the curvature here of the joint where those two arms meet. Most of these Auto Shape control points have tool tips that describe how they affect the Auto Shape. What you'll want to do is move the pointer over a control point to see the tool tip that describes the property governed by that control point. So that's, in other words, that says roundness for the roundness of the edge. This one. Let's go ahead and zoom in on this so we can see this a little bit better. Zoom in on this donut is a good one to demonstrate this but if I roll over these control points, that says Alt Opt to drag segment. Hold down the Alt Key to drag that segment like so. Here it says click to reset. So I can reset that control point. Let's go back over to some of the other Auto Shapes. Click on them and roll over the control points. That one says click to switch corners. So I have different kinds of corners by clicking on that and so on. Let's go ahead and double click on my magnifying glass, bring that out to a hundred percent. Now, Auto Shape Tools create shapes in preset orientations. For example, the Arrow Tool draws arrows horizontally. That's the first tool in that drop-down. There's a horizontal arrow. However, you can transform Auto Shapes to change their orientation. And I can do that simply be selecting that Auto Shape and then choosing from the Main Menu, Modify, Transform or notice that I can scale, skew, distort, rotate 180 degrees. I'm getting an error message there notice or a warning message when I change this. Let's rotate 90 degrees counter-clockwise. Editing sub-elements of an Auto Shape may cause it to behave unpredictably. So it gives you that warning. But I can transform from the original orientation. Each Auto Shape Tool in the Tools Panel uses the same easy drawing method. However, the editable attributes for each Auto Shape are different so let me review these quickly.
