Fireworks facilitates the importing of text from a variety of sources including Photoshop and Illustrator. You can copy and cut text from browsers or word processors such as Word, Simple Text, Word Pad, or other word processors. You can drag text from the source program, such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, to the current document. You can also open files and even import an entire text file into Fireworks. Fireworks can import RTF files, or otherwise known as Rich Text Format files, and ASCII or plain text formats. To open or import a text file use the File menu. Choose File, Open here at the top, and then browse to the location of the file. I have a PSD file from Photoshop that I saved that has text in it. Photoshop text right here. Click open, and that will actually open the PSD file, in this case it's a Photoshop PSD file. Let's go back to my original image there, or my original file. Let's import the file. The difference is I'm going to actually bring that text into this open document, rather than opening up a new document. Choose File, Import, browse to the location of the file with the text, in this case Photoshop text. This is going to take a little bit longer. Notice that Fireworks is working. Now I get this icon here attached to my cursor. What's kind of unique here and helpful is I can move to anywhere on my canvas and click on my mouse and Fireworks will then insert that text at that location. Now notice that this text is completely editable. I can highlight it for example, and change the size from 149 to 64, change the color, and do anything else that I would be able to do with regular text that I created right here in Fireworks. In many cases, such as with Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or Illustrator, you can facilitate this process by simply dragging and dropping the graphic. I have Photoshop open and I'm just dragging right on to my canvas here in Fireworks. Notice that there's the same text that I imported and also opened, so you have all three options, as well as obviously cutting, or copying and pasting into a desired Fireworks document. Now, when importing text from RTF files, Fireworks maintains these attributes here. RTF files can be created by Word for Windows, Word for Mac, as well as Windows Word Pad, and many other text word processors, however, when you import this RTF text, Fireworks maintains these attributes: Font, Size, and Style, including bold, italic, and underline; all your alignments, left, right, center, and justified; your leading, which is the space between lines of text; baseline shift, which I demonstrated earlier in this section of the tutorial; range kerning; horizontal scale; and the color of the first character. All other RTF information will be ignored. I should point out that according to the Fireworks CS3 documentation, you cannot import RTF text by copying and pasting, or by dragging and dropping, as I demonstrated earlier from Photoshop. Let me now conclude this section of the tutorial, and move on to the next movie, and demonstrate the various Spell Checking options that you have here in Fireworks CS3.
