Fireworks lets you use many Photoshop and other third-party filters and plug-ins. You can use plug-ins in either the Live Filters window down here in the Properties Inspector, or using the Filters menu up here in the Main menu. I should point out from the Fireworks CS3 documentation, that plug-ins and filters for Photoshop 5.5 and earlier versions are supported. Photoshop 6 or later plug-ins and filters are not compatible with Fireworks CS3. For more information on the Live Filters window, and the Filters menus, see my previous movies in this section of the tutorial. Set up your plug-ins either from the Edit Preferences dialog, or from the Properties Inspector. To use Photoshop and other third-party filters and plug-ins using the Preferences dialog box, choose Edit, Preferences from the Main menu, and then click on the Folders tab, and you'll see here additional materials, Photoshop Plug-ins, click on the Browse button. Browse to the location, the Plug-ins Folder. Browse to the location of the Photoshop Plug-ins Folder on your system, notice that here I have Photoshop Elements 5.0 and there's a Plug-ins folder, and I'm going to choose one of the Plug-ins from this folder, and then click on Select Effects, click OK, so that Fireworks will then use the Plug-in the next time you start up Fireworks. To use Photoshop and other third-party filters and plug-ins using the Live Filters window here in the Properties Inspector, draw out a shape on the canvas, select that shape, and then from the Live Filters area click on your options and then locate Plug-ins here, and again browse to the location of the Plug-ins Folder in your Photoshop Folder on your system and select the plug-in that you want to add. In this case, let's go ahead and browse to my Program File's Adobe, and here let's search for my Photoshop application; Photoshop Elements 5.0 in my case. Locate the Plug-ins folder here. That's QT plug-ins, I want just the Plug-ins Folder. There we go, Plug-ins Folder. Choose the plug-in that you want, and then notice that Fireworks will warn you, You must restart Fireworks to load plug-ins from the new directory. click OK to clear out the dialog. The third method for installing these third-party plug-ins is to add them directly into the Fireworks Plug-ins folder, copy and paste them, into the Fireworks Plug-ins folder from the Photoshop Plug-ins folder. Now I should point out that when you install Adobe Photoshop plug-ins in Fireworks, they're added to the Filters menu and to the Property Inspector. You should use the Filters menu to apply filters and Photoshop plug-ins only when you're certain that you will not want to edit or remove the filter. You can remove the filter only if the Undo command is available. Now, yet one more way of using Photoshop Layer effects, is you can also apply these filter and layer effects in Photoshop itself, and then open the PSD file in Fireworks. Many of the Photoshop layer effects are supported in Fireworks. This list from the Fireworks Help documentation describes how each effect is imported into Flash. I just did a search under Preserving Photoshop Layer Effects here, in Adobe Help, and this is what I came up with. Notice that it shows here how each of these various effects are translated into Fireworks. For example, the Photoshop Live Effect drop shadow, the mapping is as follows: Size Maps to Blur, X and Blur Y, Distance Maps to Distance, Color Maps to Color; going down the list, the Outer glow, Opacity, Maps to Strength, Color Maps to Color, Size Maps to Blur, Blur X and Blur Y, and Inner Glow opacity Maps to Strength, Color Maps to Color, and Size Maps to Blur X and Blur Y. And also, objects with any other Photoshop layer effects are rasterized. Let me now move on to the next movie and demonstrate how to create custom Live Filters.
