Continuing my more thorough demonstration of some of the more important of Fireworks CS3's Live Filters, let me now talk about the various embossing filters. Use the Embossed Live Filters to make an image, object, or text appear inset or raised from the canvas. This is another way to add depth to your flat objects. To apply an embossed filter, select the object and then here in the Filters Section of the Properties Inspector, click on the Add Live Filters, or choose a Preset icon. Choose from the drop down menu, Bevel and Emboss. There are actually two emboss filters, Inset Emboss and Raised Emboss. Let's set off with Inset Emboss. Here you have some settings for the width of the Emboss. Notice that I can exaggerate that so you can see exactly what Fireworks is doing here. And probably the default lower value is probably better. Again, my students tend to sometimes lay this on a little bit too thick. There's also a percentage for Contrast, Softness value, as well as an Angle, and then down here there's a Show Object. If you turn that off it actually hides the object, it only shows you the Emboss, which is kind of interesting. Here in this object, let's go ahead and add the other Emboss Filter, the Raised Emboss. Let me go ahead and click off of that so it's no longer selected. Notice that the Raised Emboss, the Emboss is lower, down below and to the right. The Inset Emboss is above, up and to the left. Notice that after I've added the Emboss, or any filter, I can double-click on the filter, the Live Filter, and get this Properties dialog here. I can turn off the Show Object, Adjust the Angle, Contrast percentage, the Softness, as well as the diameter or width. You can also apply Emboss to text. Let's demonstrate that with this object here. Let's go ahead and apply the Raised Emboss on the text there and let's increase this width to see this a little better, and adjust the angle. You don't have to leave the angle at the default, lower right-hand corner for the Raised Emboss, and upper left-hand corner for Inset Emboss. That's probably a little bit too much there on the width value. That looks pretty good. Again, the idea is to get some 3-dimensional imagery out of your flat text objects, or graphic objects. So there you have demonstrations of the Inset and Raised Emboss options for both text and vector objects. Let me now move on to the next movie and demonstrate in more detail two more very important Fireworks CS3 Live Filters, and that is applying drop shadows and glows.
