Fireworks provides excellent support for importing native Photoshop PSD files with options for retaining many aspects of the imported files including layers, masks, and editable text. As a result, you can bring Photoshop images into Fireworks for further editing and Web optimization without losing the ability to export the images back into Photoshop. You can drag individual Photoshop graphics into Fireworks or you can import an entire Photoshop file. Each graphic you drag becomes a new bitmap object. Text is also imported as bitmap objects and becomes uneditable as text. In this example, I've dragged two graphics from separate layers in a Photoshop PSD file, this photograph and this text. Now notice this text is a bitmap. I can't double-click on it and edit the text, spell check it, or change this healthy living longer to longers, or modify the text in there. This is just a bitmap graphic. Let me go ahead and delete these two graphic objects and re-drag the objects back into Fireworks. Notice that I have three layers, a white layer, my photograph layer, and then my text layer. Now, when you import or open a Photoshop file in Fireworks, the Photoshop file is imported into a PNG file using the Import preferences that you have specified. In addition to preserving layers and text as specified by the import options, Fireworks preserves and converts the following Photoshop features: layer masks, layer effects, note that layer effects and live filters may vary in appearance slightly. It also supports blending modes for layers, as well as the first Alpha Channel in the channels palette. Photoshop adjustment layers, clipping groups, and paths are not supported by Fireworks. Fireworks ignores these features when importing Photoshop files, however, you can export paths to Illustrator in Photoshop and then import the Illustrator file into Fireworks. The way that you'll import files is simply by choosing File, Import from the Main menu. Let's go ahead and find my Photoshop example files here. It's going to be Photoshop sample. Notice that I get this icon here, so what I do is I click where I want to set or import the Photoshop image. Notice that there is the same image, this time all together in the same relationship as it is in the original Photoshop file. Now I should point out that in Windows, Photoshop file names must include the PSD extension for Fireworks to recognize the Photoshop file type. Now in all these cases, whether I'm copy or pasting, dragging and dropping, or importing, or even opening a Photoshop file, it will be imported into a PNG file. If you make changes and want to save the file as a PSD now, you can either just save the file as a PSD or export it to the PSD format. Saving it is probably the most straightforward, just choose File, Save As, and New in Fireworks CS3 is in the drop-down menu here, Save as Type, you now have the PSD option. Photoshop PSD, right there. Now, Fireworks provides support for importing native Illustrator, CS2, and CS3 files, so let me move on to the next movie and demonstrate how to work with Illustrator files in Fireworks CS3.
