In the previous movie, I provided a summary overview of the Fireworks CS3 export process. Let me now back up a bit and go over in more detail, some of the export processes with an emphasis on those areas that I predict will give you the most trouble. This is based on past experience with my many Fireworks students. Now, if you're exporting a file with either buttons, pop-up menus, symbols, or slices, you'll need to have a good handle on your exporting slice controls, so let me review these in more detail. To export your files after you've set up your optimization settings, choose File, Export, in this case you won't do the Export Wizard down here, but simply Export. That'll take you directly to this export dialog. The most important thing to remember is where you are saving your files, especially if you're creating a mixture of images and HTML documents, you'll want to make sure that you're saving your files to your site root, if you're working with Dreamweaver. Usually you'll want to place your images in an images sub-folder as well, but down here, you'll notice, that there's a Slices option, and this may also cause you some problems. Your three options are: None, which turns any slicing in the document off, so that no slices will be exported at all. Export Slices is the default, and is usually the one you'll want to choose. This will use the slice objects to determine the slices, and the last one is Export Slices along Guides. When you choose this option, Fireworks will give you a warning: Slice along guides does not use behaviors or slice objects. Choose Export Slices to export slice objects with behaviors, what this will do is it will use the ruler guides, when you choose this option, to go ahead and slice up your document. You might want to use this option if you just want to cut up your images, not along any slices that you've predetermined, but maybe along guides that you've set up on the canvas. Now, you'll also notice that there is an Export Selected Slices Only. If I go back and select several slices by holding down the Shift key and then clicking on the slices, I've got those three slices selected, then I go back and choose File Export, notice I have this option: Selected Slices Only. You may want to use this option if you've already exported a sliced document and then you've gone back and made changes to the original document in Fireworks once you've exported it, then you can just update the image or the slice that changed without having to export and upload the entire sliced image. It's recommended that you custom-name slices in this way so that it's easier to locate them in the replacement. So, I'm going to go ahead and cancel this. Now, you can also export selected slices by right-clicking on them in Windows, whereby Control clicking on them in the Macintosh operating system. In this menu will be one at the bottom called Export Selected Slice. That'll export just the slice that I've right-clicked on. Then you can go ahead and locate where you want that slice to be exported to. Usually you'll want to put these in an image sub-folder. Now notice that these slices here are named in a generic way: BOL home underscore R1 underscore C1, that's why it's probably better to customize the naming of your slices, which I'll demonstrate for you a little later in this tutorial. Again, typically the best location to export these slices is a folder within your local Website. You'll also want to enter a filename, but you don't need to enter an extension because Fireworks will do that for you. Now if you're exporting multiple slices using the technique that I demonstrated previous to this one, Fireworks uses the name that you enter as a root name for all exported graphics. That's why all these slices are the same root name, BOL home, that's the name of the actual Fireworks file. Now, you'll also notice there's an HTML drop-down. It's grayed out here because I've selected an individual slice, but any document that does have slices, behaviors, symbols, hot spots, image maps, or pop-up menus, will require Fireworks to export an HTML file, so let me move on to the next movie and give you some more details of how to set up your HTML export options here in the Export dialog.
