Creating Vector Graphics / Editing with Path Operations

Subtitles of the Movie

Continuing my review of various ways of editing your vector paths and using different operations to change your vector objects, you can use Path operations in the Modify menu to create new shapes by combining or altering existing paths. You'll do that by selecting several paths for example, and then choosing from the main menu Modify, Combine Paths, Join. Now notice that both of these paths are joined together, likewise you can choose Modify, Combine Path, Split, to split them up again. Let's go ahead and select all three paths, and let's combine paths and join them all together. Now let's split them apart so that there are three individual paths here. Notice that there are additional commands here under the Modify, Combine Paths option, including Union. Punch, Union, Intersect, and Crop require two or more paths. Let me demonstrate these. It's probably the best way to learn these is if I demonstrate them. Let's select these two paths. Let's actually change the color of one of these paths here to make this a little bit easier to demonstrate, and let's select both of these paths, notice that there's a part of each path that overlaps each other. Choose Modify, Combine Paths, Union, notice that both of them are combined together and the color is switched to the first path there. Let's go ahead and undo that, and then do Intersect, probably the easiest way to do that. Let's bring those back, and now let's do Intersect, Combine Paths, Intersect, a little bit unpredictable on this one. Let's try doing Intersect here as well. Let's change the color. Highlight both. Choose Combine Paths, Intersect. Let's undo that. In fact, let's undo both of them, and you can see that the Intersect will just keep, in that case, again, this is a little unpredictable. Oh. I had all three shapes selected. Let's select just these three. The reason it was blank is that I didn't have anywhere where all three shapes intersected, so let's do these two first and redo that so you can see. What's happening is only the part that's intersecting is capped, let's undo that, and now let's do an intersection of each of these three and now what will be the result of my combined paths intersect is just that section that where all three paths intersect. Perhaps you can see that right in there. Let me go ahead and do that again, but change the color of this one again, so you can maybe see that a little bit easier. Let's do something a little bit more bright. Okay. So, it's going to be probably this part right in there that's intersecting. Let's highlight all three, Modify, Combine Paths, Intersect, and there we have it. And now let's do Punch. Again this will require two paths selected, Combine Paths, Punch. See the difference there? There's the Punch, there is before the Punch so you can see that it's just punching out where the orange shape was. Let's go back and now do the last one. Modify, Combine Paths, Crop, so there's the crop. Let's do that again. There's the crop. Let's move it, and I'll do it again. It's probably the best way, it's just experimentation, trial and error. That's the best way for me to demonstrate these rather than read you the descriptions out of the Help area. Alter Paths. Let's Combine Paths, Crop, and there's the crop. Notice that it's cropping out just this section and removing everything else. So there's the crop there. Now, in addition to the Modify, Combine Paths options, you have more options under the Alter Path command, Simplify, Expand Stroke, Inset Path, Hard Fill, Anti-Alias Fill, and Feather Fill, as luck would have it, most of these commands are also found here in the Path panel in addition to the Join and Punch and Split paths that I showed you previously in this movie. So, let me now move on to the next movie and demonstrate some of the ways of altering the paths of your vector objects using the various tools and techniques here in the Path Panel.
